Got a setup for my first semi large tank, a standard 75 on terrific boxing day sales Approx 520 for tank, nice stand, substrate, filter, heater, background, lid, and light (rocks were collected aside form the tall one to the left). :headbang2

I must say filling this thing with a 5 gallon bucket and a sink 50+ feet away took quite a while, I can only Imagine what you true monbter tank members must go through.

Got it set up 2 days ago and the silt has finally settled to a good extent! alowing me a good picture.

1/2 of my filration is already cycled plus some water is from my 30 and i added some pre readied bacteria from the fish shop and hope to move some inhabitants in within 1-2 weeks...

...which is where you fellow MFK members come in. My only certain stock for this tank is 5 D. Compressiceps that are presently approx 1.5-2.5 inches and in my 30 happily coexisting (for cichlids) while the 75 cycles. Any suggestions? I would like other african species if possible but willing to see all suggestions.

Looks perfect so far!! If you're into biotopes then some Vallisneria spiralis would make a perfect addition to your Dimidiochromis compressiceps. Nimbochromis polystigma is another beautiful piscovore that would go well with your D. compressiceps.

Tanks looks great. Congrats! :)

I'd stay on the smaller side of haps for tankmates in a 75. Any Nimbochromis will get far too large and aggressive for a 4' tank (as would any other large predators). D. compressiceps, while getting big, sort of break the rule in that they sort of keep to themselves and tend to hover in the upper corners (as opposed to swimming a lot).

A group of larger peacocks or smaller Protomelas, Copadichromis or Placidochromis would fit a 75 well. You could probably do three species if you choose right.

The silt has almost dissapeared and I got a cleaer picture of the tank just now. I'm definately going to keep an eye out for rock like the jagged tall peice i bought but not adding much more to the tank.

I must say I will definately be keeping my eyes open for copadichromis trewavesae. Keep the stock suggestion coming, even if they're not cichlids. also do any peacock species school, or hang out in groups? I'd really like a schooling or semi schooling species for the tank and i've heard peacocks naturally school in the wild.

The only adult Malawi cichlid that I've ever seen show and schooling behavior in a tank is Ps. acei (and that is only occasionally and in a 180).

In nature, open water Utaka (Copadichromis, Nyassachromis) form massive schools of hundreds to thousands of fish.

Cyprichromis will school, but I've never tried keeping them with Malawi haps or peacocks. It may work if the Malawi cichlids don't mess with them.

How about tanganyikans? as long as the animals are compatable with the d. Compressiceps i will look in to them regardless of geography though i'd prefer other african fish.

coould you list some of the nyassachromis species that might work in a 75

I forgot you had D. compressiceps. I definitely would not put Cyps in there with them. Expensive snack.

Sorry...
