Coral life is bEst bang for your buck. I suggest you buy a big one now if you plan on upgrading

Hahaha, I don't, lol. I sold ALL my big tanks except two. I didn't even plan on doing SW but a friend gave me this setup. At one point I had a basement FULL of tanks. Biggest being 450 gallon that I never actually set up, lol. I have my 300, my 225, and 3x75's(2 are holding tanks for my Ray pups, and the 3rd is this one).
But you never know I suppose....

First things first...I recommend AquaC skimmers. With a oversized aquaC and good flow you shouldnt need a filter if you clean your substrate regularly. I dont in my reef tank. That being said, a sump of some kind with your protein skimmer would be the best one two punch.

For a 75...I might just get a lion. These fish are super intelligent, friendly...great pets. I dont think adding a grouper or a trigger to a 75 to harass it will do you any good. Mine learned to eat from my hand and was the best SW fish I have ever owned. RIP Flava flav.

And lastly..."super rare vampire trigger"...you mean niger trigger? They get those red fangs when they get older...you just cant see it when they are young. I wouldnt say they were super rare either.

Yeah I think I found a buyer for my RO Unit and my iPo touch so I should be able to grab a decent skimmer. And I've decided I'm going to get a jeweled moray for sure. I don't know what his tankmate is going to be.

I've been talking to this local guy who's trying to open his own pet shop and he sid he can order a puffer for me if I want one, but he's telling me I don't need a skimmer. He said with enough LR and good circulation I should be fine with just a my aquaclear. He has a 125 reef tank with corals and etc. and he said with his 400 lbs of LR and 3" sand bed he's been fine without a skimmer. So my question is "are they absolutely necessary?" I've I've got good mech filtration and a decent amount of LR should I be fine?

I recommend them for all tanks, especially large FOWLR's...hers the reason why. Reefs are generally speaking stocked fairly lightly. There isnt much to skim out of the water. This being said, my 75g reef gets a nasty surface scum if I dont skim...so thats a big reason that I do. The other reason I do is that Id rather not mess with the success and the h2o quality levels that I have now, which are awesome.

THAT being said...FOWLR tanks generally have less area in tank for bio-filtering because the focus is on the fish and letting them swim instead of making places for corals to grow. So you have a way higher bio-load with less of a bio-filter...you can not skim if you want to, but I think that its going to save you a lot of pain.
