New 90g stock w/ Ghost Knife?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks for all the ideas...
yea its standard 4 ft 90 gal with 2 eheim 2217's

at first glance hardly any research, i'm liking in this order: (I want to try to get a pair of whatever i go with):

1) oscar (out of the question i think)
2) festae (read theyre super aggressive...more so than the others and would just slaughter the ghost knife?)
3) la ceiba freddi
4) green terror
5) heroes rotkeil
6) salvini (altho apparently they dont get bigger than 6 inches? looking for a bit bigger)
7) jack dempsey
8) geophagus tapajos

pros and cons for these in terms of ghost knife compatibility??
i'm planning to have just a cichlid (pair hopefully), ghost knife, and a pleco. if adding dither fish would help with aggression i could definitely add some, otherwise i would probably not. And I've got some good driftwood/rock setups so there will be plenty of caves. I also have no idea how much any cost or how hard they are to find so maybe that could eliminate some

any advice would be much appreciated!

1) oscar
pros: very mellow and very frendly cichlid they'd do well with BGK
con: a pair might eventually b too big once fully grown with a fully grown BGK
2) festae
pro: beautiful colors
con: too agressive will probably kill ur BGK
3) la ceiba freddi (not too familiar with them i'll let someone else help out)
4) green terror
pro: great colors and behaviour, suitable size even fully grown
con: might be a bit too agressive for a BGK and intimidate him so he'll always hide, although some can be melow
5) heroes rotkeil
pro: right size, great colors , relatively peaceful, won't hurt ur BGK
cons: might find them too inactive or boring
6) salvini
pro: right size, great color, intresting behavior
con: too agressive specially when mating will kill ur BGK
7) jack dempsey (never kept one so i'll let someone else chip in)
8) geophagus tapajos
pro: very peaceful, will get along great with ur BGK, intersting behavior when in groups of 5 or 6 and nice color
con: they do better in groups, so a pair might b skitish

There r probably other pros and cons i didn't think of but I'm sure someone else will mention things i forgot.
Also have u checked out Amphilophus lyonsi?

I ended up getting one oscar its about 1-1.5" right now just a little guy...

could I put 6 geophagus tapajos in there?

Final stock would be 1 ghost knife, 1 oscar, 6 geophagus tapajos, 1 pleco probly a gold nugget. I'll put as many geophagus as i can fit long term...just guessing thatd be around 6 but if i can fit more let me know.

Once fully grown the tapajos will reach 6" which would make your tank rather over stocked. To give you an idea, I am growing out 9 red head tapajos in my 160g and plan to reduce that number to 6 once they mature (they're right around 2.5-3" right now).

I hear ya. Really all I want is a breeding pair of something in there, I'd be alright if I got 6, waited for a pair then sold all but the pair right?

Breeding pair of cichlids would mean bad news for the BGK and the Oscar.

Why not leave it at the BGK, Oscar and Gold Nugget Pleco? Seeing as a 90g is the standard housing for 1 full grown Oscar or are you wanting more movement in the tank?

you think the tapajos would get aggressive at the oscar and bgk? for some reason i thought theyd be a bit more mild. Anything you can suggest that would be good to breed in there?

yes the idea was more movement. I need somethin else in there thats for sure...ghost is more nocturnal and plecos dont move much

Bgks are night predators they will eat any fry. As for stocking as long as the bgk can hide it will be ok. The Oscar will try to eat it once big enough. I've keep a 6" bgk with a pair of jds. The male was 6" and the female was 4" . They did fine niether bothered the bgk.

I know people who have kept breeding pairs of red heads to themselves but most keep them in groups of 5+. If you're not dead set on the Oscar and BGK could do a pair of red heads, pleco and then a nice schooling tetra.

I'm dead set on the Oscar and ghost knife just lookin for something bigger than say kribensis to try to breed in there that won't attack the oscar or knife
