new aimara, need some tips please..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice Aimara. Make sure there's no hole or opening on top. They're good jumper/escape artist!

Have a look at Jelly's Venezuelan Aimaras; I think you're spot on with the locale, based on Jelly's.

Sorry I dont understand, are you saying that mine is Venezuelan as well? I am also hoping that Jelly would give his opinion on this one.

thanks, and I already put a tight lid on.
cheers

I have found that both my aimara have taken time to settle when moved and have taken weeks to settle properly. usual behavour will be attacking food and spitting it back out. Provide a little bit of cover or a suitably sized piece of wood statigically placed to provide something to sit behind and call home. It will come round.

It does look like a Venezuelan aimara. In regards to food they can be fussy. both of mine will take whole sprats very enthusiasticly, they will take trout and salmon but don't really like white fish meats.

Yes, sorry, It does look very much like a Ven, based on the similiarites between it and Jelly's Ven Aimara.

ok thanks for the info, hope this one will adjust just fine.
cheers

thanks alot for the info, was expecting you jump into this thread. My aimara does exactly just like what you described above, he ignored all the food I gave him. On the first day, I knew that he had taken a feeder gold fish, but that was it, he hasn't taken anything else ever since; and that even during the night time, when all the lights are off.
He seems to enjoy the currents I put in the tank, but then again he always hide back in the corner every time I come by. However he still attack the glass whenever I wave my hand infront of the tank (thankfully, lol)
I guess I'll let him getting used with his new home before I upgrade the tank size in the future.
Have you ever try earthworms with aimara? Is it a good idea? Because my black wolf seems to enjoy earthworms alot.
cheers

Yes I have. I forgot about that. I usually buy a box of them from my fishing shop, they must think I go fishing alot. I feed lots of my fish earthworms as I think it provides nutrients not provided with the fish meats I feed. The smaller of my two really likes them. I also stick live shrimp occationally for some alternative nutrition and something to chase. I think variety is key to good health.

thanks alot for all the info, I will give mine with mixture of food as soon as he settles down, so glad that I can finally get my hand on this species..

I agree with Jelly, aimara need long time to adaptation. When the aimara feel stress, it will attack anything, including the net, glass of tank when you stay close to the tank. My aimara did not eat prawn for two weeks, it bite the prawn and spit out. Do not worry about it.
I think size of the tank is most important to reduce its stress. MY aimara is 18 inches lives in 60*30*30 inch. It looks comfort. It stay in the mid of tank about 60% of time, did not stay in the buttom or in the corner of tank compared with the small tank. It took about 5-6 prawn everyday. I will tell you about my idea for setting the Aimara's tank
1) My opinion: Size of tank is most important. Width and Height make it feel relax
2) Putting the wood in the tank make it feel secure
3) putting the power head to create the flow
4) I turn on the light for 24 hours, Someone recommend to reduce the light, but i would like to see my fish. So i turn on the fluorescent 24 hours and put the white sticker at the buttom of tank, easy to see the Aimara.
5) put some tankmate. I think tankmate will reduce its stress. i mix my fish with wide-bar SD, Pecu and giant snakehead.
These are my idea. Happy with your fish
