Often when fishing for other species you'll hook and/or catch gar. Often they cut you off and you lose tackle, or if you do land them, you have to deal with the teeth to release them. While they are edible, they aren't great eating. Their flesh has kind of a cottony texture and they are tough to clean. They also aren't very good fighters pound for pound. Don't get me wrong, a 5-foot long gar will pull hard because of his sheer size, but catch a gar, then catch a similar sized redfish and the redfish fight blows the gar away. They really aren't pretty either.
I guess if I lived in an area where I didn't encounter them all the freaking time, and had the resources to set up a tank big enough to support one it might be interesting.

Hmm. I think its a matter of opinion, but I think all gars are gorgeous. I appreciate the uplifting support youve provided sirGator;2972661; said:What do you mean they aren't pretty?!![]()
