When you approch the situation with the goal of making money...(an investment) your setting yourself up to fail IMO.

Yes it can be done but it takes time to develope the pairs...find the correct breeding environment...raise the fry into saleable fish...find and establish a market...ECT.

You have to concider the price and popularity of the fish you want to breed. More expencive fish have the potential to make you more money but how many of the babies can you actually move? Con's...Red Devils...and Oscars...are all relitivly simple fish to breed but the resulting babies sell for a dollar a metric ton. You have to strike a ballance. Find some intresting fish with a good demand or fish that are not seen every day. Red bay snooks come to mind and also the greens if you can find them.

Too common and you have to produce a huge number of them to break even and if you go too rare...you'll have trouble moving them.

As wolf has mentioned. Convicts breed like crazy and they produce so many fry that you would be sitting on fish that you cannot move because everyone and their brother breeds them. Keep in mind that you will have an increase in electric bills, fish food, and all the time it takes to do frequent water changes. I have 20+ tanks up and ruuning and let me tell you its a big chore to clean and feed these little ones as they grow. Ive been breeding for 3 years and i have yet to turn a profit. all ive been able to do is break even after all the expenses of electricity, food, water bills etc.... The list goes on. If you do breed and sell for a small profit ide say you are doing good. Im moving around 100-150 cichlids a month to pet stores and online customers with very very little profit. Not trying to scare you away from trying, im just letting you know the ups and downs. And on a last note that if you want to start breeding fast the adult fish you purchase for breeding are going to come with a bigger price tag than growing fry out. Or just go with fry and wait months if not years for them to produce fry. Good luck....

You think its going to fail.

And what does a dollar a metric ton means.

It means that you can have tons of fry and you wont be able to get much for them. Convicts provide tons of fry and there isint much return on the $$ side. So cons are a bad way to make $$$

Im not saying it is going to fail for you , i wanted to let you know what to look out for. It sounds simple to feed a fish and let it multiply and then sell it for profit. But theres alot more than that. Also keep in mind tumbling. As most cichlids are mouthbrooders (africans).

What if I could sell many fry for cheep price so people buy more and by selling more I make a profit.

You have been doing it for 3 years. Whats your setup.

If you sold LOTS of fry then you would be doing what is called as "FLOODING THE MARKET". Hense the price would even drop lower. You will learn that one in college.(supply and demand). Ask your local pet stores what they sell and work with them. Best way i have found.
As far as my setup, here are a few shots of one of my fishrooms

Heres a video of some fry growing out too

Do you mean how much it cost to setup all those tanks?
If i had to guess with the tanks.filtration,lights,pumps,stands. Just for that stuff I would guess at around $800 - $1000.

And how much do you make selling fry a month. What size do you sell your fry. How much did the triple stand cost and the iron stand with 2 55s on it cost?
