he's gonna be an absolute beast in no time. I heard a good way to get them to develop nice markings when they grow is to have them in a heavily planted setup while they're young. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Oh I think he will be!
If the plant thing is true i'm glad I have 5 type of plants in with him at the moment, We'll see how he colours. Definitely coloured up a lot since I got him.
 
Seems like you're on the right path then. I reckon he will grow incredibly fast if you keep him in such a warm tank, don't fret if your heater breaks down cos I know they can tolerate a bit of the chills.

Yeah he's put on a little over an inch in about 3 weeks. I've heard there very hardy! Probably why a lot of the bigger ones have survived so many floods. They eat like elephants too.
