Quite a bit of people on here keep barebottom tanks. It is much easier to maintain and IMHO, much more pleasing to the eye.

x2 Also doesn't matter if they have substrate or not. As long as the fish looks healthy and is eating fine then that's all that matters. :)
 
In nature most fish does not live on a mirror...If some people are to lazy to care for such animals they should not buy them. Polypterid fishs lay often on the floor. Laying on cold glass is not very pleasing. They can´t hold on it either. They get no grip on it. Most zoo animals look healthy too. We should offer our animals the most natural circumstances possible and not something like that.
 
LOL, what do FISH need traction for? THEY SWIM.
also, glass doesn't get cold if you have a heater, obviously...
