New bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well for shrimp a lot of people say it's bad and then some others say it's not so I've heard it's bad because it is high in thiamine. As far as other pellets I can't really list any others cause there are so many. Almost anything hikari makes is good, NLS (New Life Spectrum) I've heard is pretty good. I personally have only used hikari not because I don't want to use the other, but because the other are available locally for me. Something I do is when I am looking for hidden pellet (some random pellets I may find in my LFS) I see if they are pellets, see if they are sinking, and then look at the crude protein. As long as the crude protein isn't too low I'll end up buying and trying it out. As far as exotic tank mates there are a good amount, but it'd narrow them down depending on your tank size.
Sorry don't mean disrespect, but thaimine (thaimin) is not bad. Thaimin is protein that is found in most tropical fish, you can tell its a protein by the "in" ending likke insulin and such. thaiminase is bad. thiaminase is an enzyme (all enzymes have an "ase" ending) that breaks down thaimin. Thiaminase are found in cyprinids (which is why goldfish and rosy reds are bad feeders for extended use). If only thaimin is found in shrimp then that's good, but is thiaminase is found in shrimp then that's bad.

My bad lol it's thaiminase I didn't realize autocorrect replaced it with thiamine thanks for clarification.

no problem, and looks like i'll stop feeding shrimp from now on. Thanks for bringing that up.

Nice Nigerian WC Senegal.

WC senegals are not rare, maybe just the Turkana variants. The commonly found WC senegals are usually from Nigeria. There are plenty; lots of LFS/Vendors don't bring them in because lack of demand. They are just senegals, not much difference from a CB. One of my LFS actually does order senegals from Nigeria, I bought an 11" WC Senegal for $25. They had a bunch of 8"-10" as well.

ya when I meant "rare" I was just indicating that they are harder to find than most other bichirs in the hobby. i've never seen WC sens for sale while (example) PBBs, congicus etc are sold seasonally/regularly by vendors and private sellers (like you).

Do you have any WC sens or lake turkanas in you collection? i've never seen anyone display a thread like, "New WC senegal bichir" ever in this forum. These WC sens need to be more appreciated IMO.

Senegals don't appeal to me. Maybe if Turkanas were available. I wouldn't mind some real monster Turkana. I generally don't keep upper jaw bichirs. I prefer lower jaws because they get 20"+. Yes, like you said senegals are not appreciated as much. Maybe because it has no color or patterns.

And theyre so available ^ it makes people get bored w/ em real quick. And they only get around 8 inch usually so they're easily eaten by bigger polys. Then there's the whole CB thing, which is a bummer they're not bred more responsibly. I like the albinos though since they're the brightest short of platinums
