new bio media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok really stupid here

yellow/white circles are the socks (200M) underneath very large 100 micron (might be smaller) bag... this whole area is sealed glass no chance water to make its way out of here except through black fine sponge then filter floss(also sealed glass water has to flow through this no chance for bypass)
green is bio this will be a maze to force all the water through media (lil white rectangle is my old protein skimmer filled with bio works nice)
blue is laverock and black is pump and heaters....

sorry its a BMP file... dont know how to change that....

How did the media situation turn out?

for the lava rock use eheim efilav search on doctor fostersmith.com

seems to me like you run the risk of reducing the speed at which water flows through the filter. i would go with bio media that doesn't clog so easily. personally i woudlnt use the lava rock at all its nice and porous but i find it difficult to clean plus as the water passes over it, the rock is really prone to breaking and you dont want that rock powder/sand to get into the return pump.

or just go to a land scape supply yard and buy lava rock for 0.10-0.30 cents a pound and give it a few wacks with a hammer.....

well slower flow alows for more contact time with the BB.... and pending the type of lava rock it doesnt break down... my buddy has had rock piled in his sump right next to his pump for over ayear now with no problem...

you dont want it to slow it down too much or you have to worry about the power of pump you use. you dont want flood the sump. unless you made some sort of bypass at the top of the sump if the prefilter or bio filter backs up. so water could still get to the return pump.

i know it sounds like a improbable but you can never be to cautious with sumps. (aww floods!)

you make no sence here buddy.... if you set your sump up right its impossible for it to overflow..
