Hi all! So if u didn't read i was going to adopt a parakeet from my store, and so i have! Really cute pastel Budgie! So im a first time bird owner, BUT i do have a lot of knowledge and experience with them, scince i am currently bird certified at my work (Petco). I just wanna be sure im doing everything right. Ive got him millet, cuttle bone, food (seed/pellet mix) and toys. I brought him home two nights ago and he's being extremely shy and quiet (which i expected due to the stress of a new environment). Thankfully i finally witnessed him eating to alleviate one of my worries. So to get to my ?'s: First, i've been covering him with like a fleece blanket during the night (good idea or bad?) Second how long should it take for him to become comfortable in his new environment? As a follow up ? to that, how will i know when he's at ease in his new home? And a final goofy question, any name ideas? I'm stumped LOL! I've been callin him "Free Bird" coz he was free but i dont think thats a fitting name considering hes in a cage and has his wings clipped.....BUT HE'LL GET SPOILED!!!!! LOL thanks for reading!

Ya everything sounds good to me with his setup one thing you can try an ddo is swich out his toys regularly to make sure he stays entertained. For the covering him up I would not cover him up with fleece he could get his nails stuck in it or bite a piece of it off which wouldnt be good. I would use just a normal sheet or canvas something like that. Generally it takes around a week or so for them to get comfortable in his new house and you will know when he is settling in when he sings all of the time and doesnt run away from you all of the time. Hmmm some good bird names. Well most people think I have weird names for my animals because I give them human names. Some I can think of off of the top of my head are ed, zulu, zazu, tango, george, henry you could also go to google and type in bird names and they will give you tons of names to choose from.

personally, since freebird is the most epic rock song ever, i think freebird is a phenomenal name. I actually think you should get several birds, and name them all freebird. Then teach them all to say "play freeeeeebirrrrdd, dude" *

*Disclaimer: I know nothing about pet birds, which ones talk and which ones don't. This last comment may not apply in your situation.

Thanks for the input! He's doing great now! He loves his new toy i got him and goes to town on his avi-cakes and millet! LOL

Only thing is i have a terrible time getting him to come out of his cage. And once hes out he constantly flies back to his cage. Is this normal? And is it because hes afraid of me/other people or just attached to his cage? Another ? is how do you read the bird band? It has some letters followed by an 08 that's inverted compared to the other letters/numbers. I assume the 08 is his birth year but i was under the impression that the bird band has both the month and year that the bird was born on.

very good advice... i once had a cockatiel get his neck wrapped up in a thread...the more he struggled the more it wound around his neck..very close call..so yes no material where they can pull the threads loose.

I am so glad to hear he is doing well! It isnt completely abnormal for them to want to go back to their cage especially if they are new. Their cage is their room it is where they feel safe so dont force him out let him come to you and come out or just open the cage door and let him come out on his own time and let him play on his cage and you can sit by him while he is playing so he will get confident with you and eventually you should be able to tempt him on to your hand with a treat. When you say fly do you actually man fly or is he just kind of soaring to his cage and not getting lift? Because if he is starting to get lift it may be time to get his wings clipped. And for reading the band if it isnt urgent I would wait until he is comfortable wih you and will let you mess with his leg with out being scared because you really dont want to restrain him or he will be scared of you for a while.

If he can fly which has pros and cons be very carefull with safety like toilet, etc.

My neighbors quaker has escaped into my yard 3 times in last year due to someone walking into the house. Bird flew right out.

He is a good bird and just sits on lawn chair but one day he might take off for good as lots wild quakers in area.
