New bird owner....HELP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No, he's totally cool with being handled and i read the band i just dont know how to interpret it. And no his wings a clipped and fine he just glides back to his cage sometimes.

Another ? is it better to provide the largest cage possible for a bird? I was thinking of getting a cockatiel cage for my lil dude!

The only thing you will have to worry about with a larger cage is the spacing in the bars you dont want their head to be able to fit through them or they may be able to hang themselves. I had a close call with my macaw I had her food door open and was changing her food she stuck her head out and then turned it and she got stuck if I hadnt been there I think whe would have really hurt herself. So be careful with that. Is it starting to become more comfortable coming out of the cage now?

Yea he digs his out of the cage time. But seems to be less inclined to flea from your finger if you take him outa the room with his cage in it. Nah the cage is definitly ok for him as far as bar space n all. Just wondering if a larger cage would have any other negatives involved....I just feel bad having him cooped in a lil cage while im not around. I want him to be able to stretch his feathers ya know?

No it woldn't be a problem the bigger the cage the better it will allow them to have more excercise which will reduce bordom which can be a problem in birds.

That's what i figured. Is there a transition period to get him used to his new cage? And another off topic ? what's the best way to hand tame a larger hookbill (in my case a nasty Jenday i believe conure and a White bellied caique) I've been taught and practice the towel and calm time with gentle words. I was taught that to grab a bird bare hand can traumatize them to hands so to use a towel is better, is this correct?

Just let your keet play in its new cage for awhile before you move him into it for good just so he will become familiar with it. To tame a large hookbill...well have alot of patience and be prepared to possibly getting bit. I have never heard of the towel thing. For all of the ones I have worked with I will make sure to talk to them really softly give them bits of treats(apples work really well for me) and dont just reach in a nd grab them like you said you have to gain their trust first if you lose that it will take quite a bit to get it back. At work we had a sun conure that was horribly wild acting and it nded up taking almost 2 months before it got really comfortable around people. Good luck!

Good advice, yea i think im going to start personally paying for fresh organic fruits and veggies for my store birds. Is it true that fresh fruit and veggies should compromise about 20% of a hookbills diet?

Two more ?'s i smoke ciggarettes and have friends that smoke pot, how sensitive are birds to things like that? (I've been ensuring no cigg smoke gets in the room with him and been washin my hands everytime before i handle him!) My friends used to smoke inside (pot) i take it that's no good right???

Your store should be able to pay for that food for you instead of it coming out of your pocket just talk to your gm. And ya I give my girl around 20% but it varies everyday just makes sure they have some fresh food and it is size appropriate. As for your other questions. Well I am very very precautios with my macaw so I avoid as much chemical fumes as possible. And makes sure when ever I have to use chemicals that have a strong odor she is nowhere near them and I often imes ventilate her room. For cigg and pot I would not be in the room around her for sure so you are doing that correctly. If it were me I would smoke outside. And I have read that after you smoke the nicotine is absorbed into your fingers which is unhealthy for birds so make sure you wash your hands like you are doing now everytime after you smoke and hold him. Yes birds do have a very sensitive respiratory system but I work with a couple of people that smoke and have birds and all of their birds are fine and I know one of them has friends that smoke pot too. So you should be fine just keep the smoke away from him.
