New bird owner....HELP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awe, I would name him Lynyrd. "play some skynyrd dude" Sounds like he's comin along. I never had too much luck with keets being lovey dovey. so I got a cockatoo, lol, now I'm the one thats smothered!!! JK I love my baby girl, she helps with everything and is a hoot. I agree about the bigger the cage the better, and maybe some mates in the future too, they love the company of other birds. Can you get pics on of him? Love to see him. Oh, millet is a great choice for treat, I've yet to meet a bird who could resist!!!!

Only thing is i have a terrible time getting him to come out of his cage. And once hes out he constantly flies back to his cage. Is this normal? And is it because hes afraid of me/other people or just attached to his cage? Another ? is how do you read the bird band? It has some letters followed by an 08 that's inverted compared to the other letters/numbers. I assume the 08 is his birth year but i was under the impression that the bird band has both the month and year that the bird was born on.

If he's afraid of your hand, it just means he hasn't been hand-raised and probably hasnt had any quality time with humans. sorry to say it but you're gonna have to build up his trust from scratch.

Thanks logo, and i was worried bout the pot smell on em. (NO SMOKING in MY house, LOL!) And yea he's hand tamed he just really digs his cage, but i credit that to his being abandoned in his cage (its been the only constant so far for him!) But im getting him a much larger "Palace" so i feel he'll become quite tame to his new loving family! My dad really digs him. Is it common for them not to sing/chatter when being handled? The birds at my work dont neither does my little guy. Update on the name we're leaning towards "Sharkie" coz we're BIG San Jose Shark fans, and it seems he is as well! Chatters "angrily" when we boo a bad play and chirps "happily" when we score! Not concrete but i like it he has kinda sharks colours to him.

When I get my macaw out she most of the time will talk for the first few minutes then she will settle down and be pretty quiet with just a few cooing sounds and then when something gets her excited she will start to talk. And when she is getting put up she will start talking too. So it is not abnormal I am sure once it starts to get really comfortable around you it will be chirping all of the time. And I am not sure on how to read the leg bands I will try and find out for you. And you could also try calling a bird specialty store they should know.

Thanks logo, and thanks for all the help everyone! Super helpful, i just wanna give my lil dude the best environment he can have! Side note hes def very young (under a year) and his cere is def a light blue! But every pic of a male i've seen has a deep dark blue cere, is he just not mature yet or do females exhibit that?

Well I am not the best on sexing keets but from what it sounds like he may not be fully mature females dont show blue ceres. But I cant be positive on it.
