If you don't think Tahitian moon sand is rough, try going over to your tank, picking up a handful, and rubbing it in between your hands like soap. Would be good to see if all batches are about the same...

I've been told that the barbs on fish like cories can be injured by rough substrates.

Yes, and it's just a pain in the ass to clean. Scraped my knuckles up rinsing that stuff in a five gallon bucket.

Gotta wonder, if it can cut my hands just by rubbing it in between them, what is it doing to fish? Especially the eartheaters you have now fishmamma...

lots of info people thank you. Fishmama right on on the link I have a place 6 miles away so awsome. I think this is what my thursday is going to consist of. I more question what is the best way to rinse sand without washing it away. was thinking aboiut it and I am simply perplexed at the thought alone.

I would really just spend the money on the flourite sand, since I'm probably the only person on this thread that has used both products and grown some serious plants in both of them. You're gonna want to use fertilizer tabs in the sand if you go with Tahitian, since it has no nutrients.

Here's flourite black sand growing a hairgrass carpet:

To wash the sand, the old school method is to pour it in a bucket, and water, agitate, drain water, and repeat. A method I have yet to try yet is to use a pillow case, put the sand in, and run water through it. I haven't had to wash sand in a while, but this is what I'll try next for sure.
