Well...

Yes, and it's just a pain in the ass to clean. Scraped my knuckles up rinsing that stuff in a five gallon bucket.

Gotta wonder, if it can cut my hands just by rubbing it in between them, what is it doing to fish? Especially the eartheaters you have now fishmamma...

Well what??

I was actually enjoying some Hot Cheetos when I read this, felt so compeld to show you guys how soft it really is.. although you can't see the softness .. it really is.. the earth eaters constantly sift through it.. that must mean something...

and as far as cleaning it .. I did it the 'bucket' way and it was very effective... it will stain your hands, finger nails, bath tub(if you do it there) and pretty much everything else it comes in contact with.. it rinses off in about 3 days of so.. You'll freak out on how black the water gets as your rinsing it.. I did. The sand also comes with a little package of liquid that is used for collecting all the remaining particles that were not rinsed out when inicially cleaning.. it supposed to go into the tank after you've added the sand. I didn't need to use it, really I didn't want to .. cause it just freaked me out.. so cleaning it thoroughly will do the job..

This is to show you that I rubbed it a good while .. just to make sure. :D

So you can see the particles better...

It scraped my knuckles, not my palms.

Fish don't have knuckles, I don't believe it'll be a problem...

Yeah, fish don't have any sensitive skin on their bodies... Or a slime coat... Hmm.

I'm really not here to argue against Tahitian moon sand. Here's how I'd break it down after using both TMS and the flourite sand:

TMS: readily available (I think every petsmart has it), definitely black, it has a bit of a shine to it (some reflective particles?), which isn't better or worse, just something to consider. It's rough, although I don't think in most cases it would really negatively affect fish it's something to note. It did cut my hands while cleaning and if you google Tahitian moon sand bottom dweller safe or something to that effect, you will see a lot of good discussion about it. Has no fertilizers and does not grow plants particularly well IME.

Flourite black sand: softer, more of a flat black color, grows plants very well. I think it might be a bit less available, and maybe a little bit pricier.

Both products are very dirty and need a lot of rinsing. Both products look good, but I think I personally prefer the less shine in the flourite.

I think if you're going to go to the effort, and spend the time and money, the flourite sand is a better product, especially for live plants. Both will look good in your tank.

Edit: oh, and if you go for eco-complete, it's a very good plant substrate and it's black, but its a gravel consistency. It is clean though, doesn't require much rinsing at all.

I just tried rubbing it between my hands. it feels like that special soap we use at work for getting oil and grease off. doesn't seem like something horrible though.

on an off note, fishmomma has nice hands, but whats the red on the finger from?

I just put 100lbs of tahitian moon sand in my tank, and I was actually surprised at how soft it was. It almost has a mud consistency it's so soft. I spent 2 days straight rinsing it, and never had any issues scraping up my knuckles.
