My blue Mamorkreb berried!

Normally, this wouldn't be exciting as Mamorkrebs berry every other month roughly. But when I was talking to other Mamorkreb keepers about my crayfish changing colors, the common theory was that it had to do with pH levels and having a tank without lights. Well, since all of my tanks have lights that theory was out, and while pH may have something to do with it, I couldn't completely accept that idea as only one Mamorkreb turned blue and the others didn't (and still haven't, so same tank/conditions/etc but only one was affected?).

Anyway, I moved the blue Mamorkreb and her one surviving juvenile to another tank, and the juvenile started turning blue as well. So, now I'm anxious to see if any of this brood will display the blue coloration and see if maybe the color morphing is a genetic anomaly in certain individuals. *shrugs* Who knows, but I think it's cool ^_^

Regardless of parentage, awesome crustacean!

cool looking craw!

Not having the correct food nutrients will turn crays a blue colour, not so much the pH or anything else. They bleach out without a proper diet & is the reason so many aquarium crays are blue.

But...If they were all in the same tank water, they probably all got the same food, so they'd all be turning blue....lol

Maybe something to do with her being in berry or she just likes wearing blue dresses???
And that's a large load of eggs!!!:grinno:

I was talking to a professor studying these crayfish, his best "guess" was that she was probably the dominant crayfish when they established their little hierarchy in the tank. And subsequently that allowed her to obtain the first pick of the food and what not, giving her an extra something for that change.

It was an interesting theory, and hey, it could be true. But for the most part, I was feeding them all the same things. The base of their diet is the same, except for the occasional treats. Maybe she got more of those than the others did, who knows. Maybe it was a protein overload, high protein diets in these gals turn the legs and claws blue, maybe in excess the whole body turns?

Don't think it's her being in berry though, the others are berried now, too. And their still their drab old greys and browns lol.

Ah well, whatever it is, she's a pretty blue gal with a big fat tail full of eggs! :P

Whoa i was just reading about them(marmorkrebs) and the color morphs. Would love to know more about how you kept that one; Tank size and occupents including decor, supplements added(if any), water parameters, water schedule, food, and feed schedule?

I got about 5 Marmorkrebs and want to more than what i'm finding on the web.

More pic's please heh

Tank Size: 10gal
Tankmates: 3 other Marmorkrebs and assorted cories
Tank Decor: Plastic cave (from Petco), caves created from stacked rocks, moonsnail shells, gravel, plants (hornwort, java fern, anacharis, "lucky bamboo")
Water Params: Temp - 74-76, pH - 7.6
Food/Supplements: No supplements. Food is a rotation of Hikari Carnivore, Algae and Sinking pellets. Assorted veggies once a week (green beans, peas, carrots, etc) and meat scraps once every couple of weeks (turkey, corned beef, fish, etc). They munch on their plants in the tank almost daily, too.
Feed Schedule: Once in the morning, once at night
Water Schedule: Water gets changed 10-20% every other week and the tank gets vacuumed along with it.

However, I removed the blue kreb to her own tank where's she's gotten darker blue. And the others, still regular coloration. *shrugs* I have no idea what's up with it, but the morphing is cool. The white and red krebs look really awesome as well. Seen those yet?

Anyway, check out : http://www.marmorkrebs.org
That's Dr. Zen Faulkes page, he's researching these gals. He's got some good info on there and his blogspot.

And no more pics until after the berry, she's away in hiding and I don't want to bug her by digging her out lol

Very cool thanks for the info black_sun. I took one of my Marmorkrebs and put it in a 29g with nothing that could eat her whole heh So far she's got a few spots she likes to chill. It's grown much faster in the larger tank as well. The other 4 in my 10g look much happier, most likely try to sell off some when they start to berry. I've seen a few molted shells so they are growing just waiting on berries heh
