New bolt cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the kind feedback everybody! I'm looking forward to watching him grow out and hopefully move him into bigger accommodations in the next year or so. As far as keeping him with a vulture cat there's another recent thread (Vulture cat info, I think) where a guy claimed a bolt got mauled by an aggressive vulture cat. I've never kept either before I got this guy so I really don't know. Just thought I should pass it along. My guy shares the bottom of the tank with two spotted pims who are too busy chasing each other around to pay him any mind and a synodontis albertii who just hangs out under the driftwood. I paid 200 bucks plus shipping which at his size I thought was a very fair price. I'm definitely happy with what I got.

Zing! :) Nope. His name is Zapp. After the fearless 25 Star general Zapp Brannigan of the Democratic Order of Planets and Captain of the Nimbus on Futurama. Thankfully my fish never seem to care about the dorky goofball names I give most of them.

Awesome fish! Your post inspired me to purchase one as well. Ill get mine next week :)
If you don't mind me asking, did you have any trouble getting yours to eat and what are you feeding?

Thanks and cool! Very good question. I've only had him three days and he hasn't come up top to take anything off the surface so I'm HOPING he's actually eating something when he's ripping around after I put food in the water. The one question I didn't ask before I got him is what he was being fed but the little literature I came across said like most cats they aren't fussy eaters so I took it for granted he'd eat what I put in the water but frankly I can't say for sure if he has yet. On the bright side he came in fat and healthy so I'm not too worried about it (knock on wood) if it takes him a few days. I feed all prepared food to my fish (Massivore Delight, Spirulina wafers and flakes, NLS cichlid pellets and freeze dried krill). If it seems like he's starting to lose weight or otherwise looking poorly I'll probably try to pique his appetite with earthworms, blood worms or ghost shrimp. Best of luck with your new bolt! I hope you post pics.

That catfish will never come up to the top and take pellets or flake food. You need to feed it cut up fish like smelt and talapia and it should eventually eat massivore.

I have a 9 inch vulture cat which is a VERY similar fish. My guy hand feeds and as soon as food touches the water goes into a frenzy. He sure loves his tilapia like jay said what I disagree is he will and does eat flakes and floating pellets from the surface and tons of it and feeds very competitively. Good luck you'll enjoy him I love my vulture cat and have thought about adding a bolt cat
