Hi,

i think you got the information from here : http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/Snakehead_circ_1251/html/channa_stewartii.html if you have a look about the Native range :

Endemic to Brahmaputra (upper, middle, lower) River basin of India and Bangladesh, and the Ganges River basin from southern Nepal southeastward (Sen, 1985; Talwar and Jhingran, 1992; Musikasinthorn, 2000). In southern Nepal, it occurs in the Kamala, Bagmati, Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali River basins (Shrestha, 1990).

And here : Sen and Dey (1984) recorded this species from altitudes above 1,500 m in Meghalaya, a plateau north of Bangladesh and south of the Brahmaputra River, India.

the Brahmaputra is the same river where Aurantimaculata came from...and Aurantimaculata need cold temperature.

Because of the large distributation of the Stewarti species there are some diffrent color morphes like : True Blue, Spec. Himalaya (the name says it already COLD), Green and the ;Meghalaya Leopard,Blue Moonbeam Galaxy Snakeheads , are all Channa stewartii this was verified by DNA testing by : Dr. Prachya Musikasinthorn (i read it in another Forum from someone who knows what he is talking about!)
Trust me your SH is a Stewartii (dont know exactly which but defentely a Stewartii and they are not winter hibernators but need colder temps. at december,January like Aurantimaculata to breed them, a friend of mine breeds them.

Very interesting read thanks a lot I have look long and hard into this and I now do think he is a sub species of Channa stewartii

BUT

All the info I can fined on this fish tells me it’s a warm temperate to subtropical species. And he is thriving in the high temps at the mo. I don’t disagree with you as I have had several snakeheads that can go down to lower temperatures I seem to remember Channa maculata was one of them but it gets very confusing in the end.

Ok not the greatest sites but that’s 2 that say 22-27o that inclues your link
(No specific information. Native range is about 22-27o N, indicating a warm temperate to subtropical species.)

But please look at this very interesting. Ok it’s an experiment but tells you something about the fish.

frankie looks like a fu*ken demon...nice fish to all one this thread...

Hi,

yes there are many wrong info becausemany people confused some Channa Species, You know what i think ? because of the distribution of C.Stewartii there are some diffrent populations as i told in the post before(and confirmed but DR.Musikasinthorn ) and they maybe need diffrent types of Temperature it depends from which area they come from so they change a bit in the coloration (some stores what to make to much money with names like: Meghalayan Leopard etc.). I think you have C.stewartii spec. Himalya look at www.snakeheads.org there you find some info nice info about them and can compare the pics with yours, also there is a nice text about breeding them (i think you already know the site.. :D )

i don't know if it is okay to post for the other forum but i think it won't be a problem because it is another type of forum it has nothing to do with predatory fishes..... have a look here : petfrd.com log in go to search and thengive in Channa and read a little bit :D
The User Amphibeus is a very expert in Channa.

ps. my Aurantimaculata won't breed but my f***ing Hoplias did ;)

Yes I do know snakeheads.org :D yes I think he is a sp :D but you are 100% right there is still so much to learn about snakeheads and there sub species. They are finding more and more and as I said there are so many importers bringing in fish they call them what you may I have said it on here before for example Channa marulius I have seen it sold as giant snakehead; great snakehead; cobra snakehead; Indian snakehead; also Channa micropeltes is sold as giant snakehead I have seen and been told we have a gold snake head you get there and its nothing exciting but then again I have had some results but all information is appreciated that why we have these forums;) .
