I have looked into this in the past. I kinda blew it off because my wife was not in support of the idea. She has had a change of heart and looks like we are gona do it. Its smaller than what I had planed last time around.

I am going to be building something in the arena of 16' X 8' X 4.5' and it will be a little over 4000G.

I am planning to do a DIY filter along the lines of this one in a 55G drum.

My questions are these -
With a pond that size & using that filter what kind of flow should I be going for and got any pump recomendations?
Should I get an external pump or just do a submersable?
Should I skim off the top or pull off the bottom?
Do you think a UV will be a must or will 4.5 feet be enoughf to stop the green bloom?

Thats all I can think of right now.

O ya - I plan to have some Koi in this pond.

Thanks in advance, Arkangel77

4000 gal is a perfect size. I also like the dimensions. Glad you got pass the approval process. That's the hardest part. j/k hope she's not reading this. haha project cancelled.

Is it going to be liner or concrete?
I would recommend 1 skimmer, 2 bottom drains, external pump (1/4hp koi pond pump). Stay away from pool pumps. You want to get the flow with low amps. 3amps is good.
One 55 gal barrel is not enough. Try 4 or more. I've used them in the past but never had luck with them. They are not bad for small ponds or QT.
I do recommend an UV. Have you considered building your own bead filter? You won't need a very big one for this size pond.

Good luck on your build. Perfect time of the year to do it.

Its gona be a Linner!
Are 3 drains really needed?
What would you recomend for a bottom drain and a Skimmer?
What kinda flow can I expect from a 1/4 HP Koi Pump?
Do you have a Link to a DIY beed filter?

Thanks a LOT for the reply!

Help me out with some of you guys more advanced experiance and knowledge - :headbang2

Where are you located, any winter time concerns?

Skim + Bottom drain = great flow

I am in South Mississippi - winter will not be a big deal

In case you don't take the DIY route for filter design. Here is a great compact filter that is very Eazy to clean. We run 8 of these units in our QT facility and takes only 15min to clean all eight if done all at the same time.

Look forward to seeing the finished project.

koienterprise - that "Eazy Pod" looks nice but its only ratted for 2000G Koi Pond. My pond will be 4000G. Will that Eazy Pod work for me? ALSO Is it a complete system?

I am still looking into pumps and trying to decide weather I should use a skimmer / leaf catcher combo OR a pipe that pulls off the bottom with a leaf separator unit.

the Pondmaster Pro Hy-Drive 4000 gph Koi Pond Pump seem nice! Great flow and it draws LOW amps at a great price.

koienterprise - If you got time to kill would you consider doing me a favor? Would you pm me with a sugjestion of what combinations or pump/filter/and accessory equipment would work well for a 4000G KOI POND? Like a complete system.

Thanks for the Input man.
