*new* Build - 4200G - help with details plz

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what do we thing guys - which would be your choice? Skimmer or basket over a bottom tube to pull water off the bottom of the bond?

I was told that Koi will keep the water mixed up good so a skimmer might be fine solo. I only want to do one drain if that's possible.

I have a skimmer only, bt my pond depth is 28" max. I think you are going deeper in which case I would do a BD too. You could get away with only one BD, just slope the bottom towards the drain.

Thanks Muske, a BD is not the end of the world - they make me nervous but I can deal with it. I want to ask this.

With a BD is a Settling tank a must have item? OR can you just do a BD to leaf catcher to pump to filter to pond?

Thanks a Bunch for the help.

I've never done a BD so I can not give any advise. I too would be neverous installing a BD into a liner....

Settling tank will help the mechanical section work more efficent. Some of the larger Bio-Filters use the volume for some settling action in the bottoms of the filter. A clean-out in the bottom quickly drains sludge and debris.

My next pond will use a wet well built into the bottom and wall or corner, then hiden by rocks and boulders.

I spoke at length with the folks from OPF.

It sounds like the way to go is Bottom drain, settaling tank, pump into a Bead type filter. They are REAL big on the bead filters over there.

Thanks, Arkangel77

Have you gone take a look at OPF yet? They really have a ton of fish...id listen to what they have to say really. I never did a pond on a larger scale so I cant really help. But at OPF they have so many fish...I bet they have an idea of what works and doesnt work.

I called them - I haven't bin out there recently BUT I did make a social out there. I am still trying to decide. I may go with a natural BIG 1/2 to 3/4 acre pond. I got a guy coming out today to look at the spot and see if its possible.

It is ALWAYS possible.:grinno:

Well, he said it would cost 3K and he could probably go 12 to 14 feet. Also said there was no reason it would not hold water. The red rock dirt/clay should work great. Nowise am gona get a few more estimates. I am getting excited. Can you say P bass, Pumpkin seed perch, a few Texas blue and a few koi just cause I can!
