New Build ~ 600 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought proper sieve filter from McMaster.com

https://www.mcmaster.com/#wire-cloth/=17kzzp2

That wire mesh is a much different type of material. Even the dutch weave is not a good fit as it wont allow debris to roll down the screen removing it from the water column. Here are some pics of real sieve screen material. As the angle the water hits it at changes the screen cuts the water separating solids of a certain size from the water column pushing them down the screen.

I was doing min sieves on this tank to "play". The sump on this tank is there for displacement of gallons on the newborn tank and a place to mount my gear for monitoring the system. The big one is for two other tanks that I am rebuilding. I need to keep that project under budget because I am replacing those tnaks with a much larger one as soon as I find the right tank/next project. I suppose a sieve is a good investment since it can easily carry over to a large system.

Design:
x4 2" incoming lines through the sieve
x2 2" lines from sieve to MBBR
out to tanks

Cool. Yea there's definitely no harm at all in playing around with it. I just didn't want you to invest too much time/money trying to get it to work properly. I frustrated the hell out of myself a while back doing just that lol.

Where do you get consumer-grade wedge wire as pictured? All I'm seeing on a google search is industrial-sized pieces

Well that sucks I already have it. Oh well try it and see what happens, the thing that sucks is I have looked in canada and it is almost impossible to find sieve screen in canada

You need to call around and do some digging. One local place that I remember contacting was a sandblasting equipment supplier I think. A lot of places wont cut pieces for you unless you have a minimum order amount. This was one of the reasons its not cost efficient to DIY one even if you do a group buy bulk order its still cheaper/safer to simply pony up and purchase a manufactured one.

Hope that helps, I don't want to hijack/clutter up Justin's amazing build thread more.

Wait, was there a Modest_Man Modest_Man sighting?!

Maybe. Just got back from Mexico at midnight.

Landed one blue marlin at about 150lbs.

These things are downright amazing... Some screenshots of the setups below. It monitors electrical usage and will report on what the operating costs are. That's rad!

I also really like the calendar and event tracking. It let's you log events like fish not eating, breeding, schedules maintenance with reminders etc...

Used velco straps with plastic bands for labeling cords. Its a small dark space to work in and the correct outlet is important. Some outlets are programmed to run based upon temp, timers, feed mode enabled or static etc...

The 832 bar is labeled as well so its easy to see what, goes where, inside the server cabinet.

The handles of the ball valves are labeled to know which Dart/Ultima combo is which. This way I can see the labeling on the pump while in front of the cabinet and other labeling on the Apex.

The Apex is now fully running the tank, all is programmed, probes calibrated and tested.
