Title says it all.
This is my first (what I consider) “fancy” camera. Haha. It was an early Christmas gift from my husband?
I’m incredibly excited to learn how to use all the features, but I have zero photography knowledge. All I’ve used for years is my phone camera.
I’ve jumped right into taking a few pictures, and it’s been ok. Just not the quality I want yet. And I know it’s going to take lots of reading/videos, practice, and patients before I get the shots I want.
I’d love any advice on things to try, videos that might be helpful, anything really:) I’ve already started reading the pinned post in here on taking aquatic pictures. That alone is very helpful. I just haven’t figured out how to adjust settings on the camera itself yet. The manual that came with the camera hasn’t been the most helpful. I’ve been reading tomsguide, but it hasn’t shown how to adjust settings on the camera itself.

I’ll use this thread to document my progress as I learn.

Anyhow, these are a few shots I’ve taken using the P setting.

I didn’t clean the glass before taking this. I didn’t even realize how streaky the glass was?‍♀

And I’m not sure how to avoid getting eye shine like this. It looks horrible.

Lens: AF-P nikkor 18-55mm
On camera flash and external flash used. I’ve been experimenting with the external flash and using a styrofoam cooler.
Still just using the P setting on the camera.
I don’t like how it distorts the colors of my green terrors. I tried adjusting the color while editing to a “cooler” setting, but it still doesn’t look right.

The african cichlids on the other hand look great. Their colors “pop” I just adjust the lighting a little. Here are a few I took with the flash facing down into the tank.
Thank you B BichirKing for the suggestion. So far I haven’t gotten eye shine facing the flash down.
I was afraid I’d lose depth in the photos having the flash pointed down, but they turned out pretty good I think.
