My sympathies too.
This is how I lost quite a few fish as well. Since then I aim to place new fish in a tank in the morning on a day that I am around all day, so I can observe what's going on every so often and correct things if I note significant problems. Doing it so saved life and health of many fish. Still, sometimes I fail all the same - either I miss something or it happens at nights only and not during the day.
It is especially easy to miss bullying / fighting in scaped and furnished tanks with smaller fish.
Don't get depressed about it. Learn as much as you can, e.g., that close monitoring in the initial period is crucial, and move on. Nothing out of the ordinary happened.
