New direction with severums and maybe more

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going back up to petco today to grab a green or turuoise severum (forget what it was labeled as... any advice om selecting a juvi? They all looked a bit different. About the size of a quarter.. some were really dark, almost black, one was light with faded bands, other had dark bands.

There are a ton of people who have kept oscars and severums together with great success.
Yeah, I agree. The thing with either species is it will depend on tank size and on the individual fish, so it's not 100% predictable. One thing you can't always do (with a lot of cichlids) is take what you're seeing from them in a bare lfs tank, often too small, or in which the fish may have only been living a very short time, and extrapolate from that to be sure what they'll do in your tank. The same sev that kills everything they put in with it in a small tank at the lfs can be a perfect citizen once you get it home to a more suitable tank (I've had it happen). The same shy little cichlid that doesn't bother the other fish at the lfs can turn into a psycho killer after growing a bit and feeling at home in your tank.

severums, and they are 3.somthing? wow... grab more then one lol, they are 7.99 at my LFS... so two cost me a little over 16.00 so for 16.00 you could do 5 or 6 severums! :)

Haha. Every now and then petco has some good finds.. I bought a flowerhorn for 12 bucks and already has way better color than the larger 35 dollar ones at my lfs. .they also had turquoise rainbows reduced to clear for 3.50.. I may buy two today but I really want a red one too

Sweet find. $3.50 for severums (even greens) is a steal. As far as coloration of severums goes, don't worry abut light versus dark. Severums are very moody fish that will go from very light to very dark for little to no reason at all. What you want to pay attention to is when their stripes are dark black and all other color on them is pale. This is a sure sign of stress.

Chances are the Petco has greens. They might every once in a while get turquoise/green mixes in, but I have a better chance of winning the lottery than them getting a true turquoise in stock.

If you have your heart set on a super red (I do too), take a look at Jeff Rapps' website. He sells all sorts of cichlids. He is currently out of stock of super reds (he generally sells them in the 1-3" range), but I spoke with him a few days ago and he said he should have some in stock in 10-12 days. So check his website (I pasted it below) in a week or so and he may have some up for sale. Jeff sells high quality fish, gets his stock from an excellent source and ships very carefully. Definitely is a good buy. If you get a red from him, make sure those Petco sevs have been quarantined for at least 3 weeks before you mix them in the same tank. You would not want all the money you paid for a beautiful red severum (cost of fish and shipping) to get flushed down the toilet (literally!!) because it got sick from something the greens carried.

+1

What works for some will not always work for others.

You are right, they are labeled green. I bought two of them since they are so cheap. I called another local petco to see what they had in the way of severums and they have golds by my work so i may stop in one night after work this week. As for the reds, I will check with my lfs to have some ordered since they were out when i checked yesterday. I would love to have some rapps fish since everyone talks about how high the quality is but i really hate to pay so much for shipping :p
