There shouldn't be any fish parasites living in the substrate without a fish host.

I do not like gravel, it traps way too much debris which leads to many problems. IME sand is a great option. Not only is it much more natural for them, but traps almost no debris and is much easier to clean (requiring little to no maintenance). I do not recommend gravel for almost any tank, sand is the way to go.
 
Still look or not.. you cannot deny that BB tanks are a whole lot more cleaner for any type of fish.. With sand.. theres always the chance of you missing something when vacuuming.. and with gravel.. well.. even with a thorough gravel vac.. there is still a ton of nasties left over.. I love the look of BB tanks.. looks clean and I never miss anything when doing water changes..
