I just finished making my new DIY fish trap that will be placed in a nearby lake. Im hoping to catch some kinds of baby fish to hopefull bring home. I was wondering what type of bait to put in the trap. The local fish in the lake are pbass, all kinds of cichlids, snakeheads, ext. Its the kind of trap thats rectangular with a inverted cone on one side that allows the fish to swim in but not out. My question is what type of bait should i put in the trap to attract fish into it. I know for saltwater you can throw any kind of meat in the trap, and fish will pick on it, but i dont know about freshwater. Let me know what you guys thinks.

to catch cichlids, use regular fish food for cichlids
to catch pbass, use regular fish food for cichids to catch cichlids, then pbass will enter to get the cichlids
to catch snakeheads, use regular fish food for cichlids to catch cichlids then the pbass will enter to eat the cichlids, then the snakeheads will enter to eat the pbass.

LOL, gotta love the food chain!

I catch small catfish, small bass, small trout, crayfishes, perch, bluegill, minnows, guppies etc with my little diy fish trap. I use one or a combo of reptomin, krill, regular fish flake, sinking pellets, aglae wafers, bloodworms, worms.

I don't keep anything. I just like to see what comes out of ponds and lakes in the No. Cali area.

I agree :screwy:
:D

I would use hot dog/vienna sausage for its very oily and the fish will pick up the scent in no time :D If your talking about lake wilson it works lol!!! I caught pbass and catfish with it on rod and reel :headbang2:ROFL: For a trap I would say get like a mesh bag and smash the bread with the hotdog for vienna sausage and it should work I think lol. Or go to china town and ask for the left over fish scraps dont know if it will work in freshwater but its good crab bait:grinno: Hoped this help you:)

raw hotdog and mustard. not kidding. it works. my and my friend went fishin and were cooking some hot dogs for dinner. we took a raw one with some mustard on it and caught a whole mess of fish!!

Adding garlic can get almost any fish to be attracted to the trap, regardless of the bait. For some reason, almost any and all fish are obnoxiously attracted to garlic.

Also, make sure it is legal to remove fish from the lake... You will like the fish that you caught that much more than they ones that you buy. We have some perch from a local river in our pond and they are my favorite fish there.

Make sure you can acclimate them onto prepared foods, the perch were easy. Just don't give them feeders and drop sinking pellets in front of the rock ledge they were all crowded under.

Good luck

I find fried chicken to be the best bait for traps and for night fishing for catfish etc.

Get the cheapest, greasiest kind (I use Wal-Mart's generally) ball up some of the skin and a bit of meat and put it in the trap.
