sad to say but that is a poor quality ebjd
how can you tell at that size? EBJD change so DRASTICALLY from when they are young to when they are adults so color isnt really an indicator and i see no deformities so what clues you in to their quality? and about the food, yes that is good sign they are eating, if your food is too rough but the right size you can try soaking it in tank water for a couple minutes before you feed to soften the pellets up a bit, and when i had mine he would go back and forth between light and dark depending on his mood so i think you cant really tell how they are from pics of them when they are stressed out from just being moved, if he continues to stay dark though it could be a bad sign though it could also be that he is just a darker color normally, just go ahead and start their treatment for parasites and then you wont have to worry about anything GOOD LUCK

I agree on the comments about quality.

Below is a picture of one of mine currently in the isolation tank. I bought two at $9.99 each (1" length). I have had them for two weeks and they are doing fine.
In a few days I'll return the Frontosa to his large tank and release the EBJDs from the fry net.

Huh, interesting...I always thought EBJD are like any other rarer color fish where the darker they are. The better quality they tend to be later on after they "peel". Because there are a few of the EBJD that looks similar to yours VFC. Oh well, we will see what my EBJD will come out to be with NFS. My first time testing with NFS pellets so lets see if it's really what it is claimed to be. :D

They are not hard to keep alive it's just hard to find healthy ones. If you get a healthy one they are just about as healthy has the normals. I got mine at 1" I raised him in a 20 gal alone feeding twice a day doing 3 wc a week. When he got to 3" I put I
him in the 55 gal with other fish. He has been doing great.

They color up fast in a month they will look like differant fish. $12 is a great price mine was $20. I just saw some .5" -1" ebjd for $7 that's the cheapest I have ever seen them. But they were so small. I almost bought one just to see how it would go. What makes poor quality is the beak nose. Along with other deformitys. Not so much color because that changes with mood and age.

Good luck they are great fish. My Ebjd and my severum are always showing off to me when they see me.

Here is mr sparkel when I got him.

Thanks Snowflake311, I thought my EBJD are going to turn out ugly since it isn't as pretty as all of your guys. Thanks for the motivation, I was planning to head out and pick out another two this coming weekend. I really dig your EBJD. :D

Heres my EBJD currently in a 20g Long He is growing super fast, eats a whole frozen bloodworm cube to himself.

And yes 12 bucks is a steal for your little guy, I paid 25 bucks for mine when he was 1"
