new eel not eating what to do ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
morays have been known to fast for long periods of time. i once had a gray moray that took 11 days to feed, but was perfectly healthy. try some ghost shrimp, silversides, smelt... in my experience "smelly food" really makes a difference in getting a fish to eat, especially morays.

Do you have him in saltwater or freshwater? Krill is always a good food. Seachem's Entice can help getting picky eaters to start eating. Don't worry about him too much, eels can go months without feeding.

I had a eel just like that a few years back and would not eat for 3 months and finally died....tried everything and as he was dieing i force fed him. 90% of them in fresh water will not eat and not live. Must be brackish or salt water! IMO

Dude they brackish fish meaning part saltwater. when in the wild they migrate to fresh water to breed much like salmon and the fresh water makes them go into a fasting period ( not eating ) tell they venture back into brackish water. change to brackish or he will die in 3 to 4 months. i have had 2 in freshwater never made it past 3 months.... they eat ghost shrimp or krill but not in freshwater only. sorry for the bad news.

:iagree: I had the same experience with my moray as well. Also provide a lot of hiding spots so he/she will feel more comfortable.

What salinity do you have him in? Should really be in sw or at least a strong brackish, was he eating before you got him?

i think its all in the presentation. Try adding a sprig of parsley with the next feeding.

am i wrong abut these ells because i could never get them to live in fresh only tell me if im wrong.

they rarely live a full healthy lifespan in fresh.

You have already been told what to do with this guy, and it's also the reason why he isn't eating.

One of my very first fish keeping experiences involved one of these guys. He died in less than a weeks time because he was sold as a freshwater eel. I knew nothing about them, only that it would look cool in my huge 55g tank! Boy was I wrong! I ended up bringing a dead eel back to the LFS. Hope you can get him into some brackish conditions soon, good luck!
