30 should be fine but it depends on what else you have on there for filtration. Will there be a canister or an HOB on there too? If the sump is the only thing, I'd definitely go for 55g's.

In addition to the sump I had planned to use a Fluval 304 that I have on hand. It's not being used so why not right heh. If I did go with the 55 could that be all the filtration I need? I also have 4 emperor 400s but I was hoping not to use any HOB type filters for this setup.

That's going to be the fun part I guess. Figuring out what pump to use as I'm not completely sure of the height of the tank once setup. I plan on building the stand this weekend. I'm thinking of a low height stand but that will change with needing enough room underneath for a 55 and room to work.

True, the 55 is pretty tall. You could get a 50 long tank, it's 48"x18" and only 13" tall.
