New Fahaka Q

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will report back with feeding stuff tomorrow.

Sorry for the thread jack, and thanks for the help.

Might get some pictures and start my own thread...For now Ill keep reading on pufferforum and here as much as I can possibly find.

My fahaka took a 3 week food strike after upgrading him to a bigger tank. Earthworms got him eating gain. Still his favorite food. Just ordered another 500.

You shouldn't have to cut them up at all. Let them wiggle to attract the puff's curiosity.

My fahaka hides sometimes, but will come and greet you when you walk up to the tank. My fahaka is pretty active, but he sometimes just sit in one spot for hours in the sand. Dither fish would be little snacks for your fahaka. Dont worry your fahaka will become more active.

I know how you feel right now but please don't get another one.

Did you pick up this fish in person?
If so, I'm guessing that you must've picked out the most active/desirable one..

Give it some time to get used to the surroundings.
These puffers are much more complex than people give them credit for - and they need to settle in when they first arrive. It may take a while, but you will notice a huge difference in their behaviour when they do.

I noticed that mine was much more active with no lights.
Have you got some floating plants?
You can also use paper towels under your lights to dim it down.

You may, to your discretion, try a tankmate while it's still young.
Choose carefully if you do. It may be on a trial and error basis.

I highly agree with the person who said to treat for internal parasites just in case.. I almost lost mine to an illness, and it's better to be preventative than panicking later... trust me on this.

Wait until they see you as the bringer of food, they'll be begging/dancing every time you walk up to the tank.

These are highly rewarding fish to take care of.
I really miss mine actually.. Probably the most fun fish I've ever had.

I didnt mean i was going to get 2 at the same time, but take it to the LFS or sell it to another fish keeper and get another one. Unfortunately i did not get to pick it out at a lfs, but i ordered it from florida.

So he will become more active when he gets larger and more acclimated?

He's eating (more like shredding and devouring) small crayfish now, but other than feeding time, he just sits and chills.

Yeah I meant that too, switching over to another one.
I guess it's your call in the end, as you should be happy with your purchase or else, but give your little guy a chance to acclimate and get used to you :)

To be honest mine was never all THAT active, I got one because of all the reports I've read of them acting like a "puppy", which to a certain extent was true to my case.

You will notice a huge difference in its personality when it gets bigger and gets used to you, especially when your puffer realizes that you are the bringer of food, which should not take long.. get ready for some serious begging and dancing as he will ask you for food almost every time you are near the tank.

Watching your fahaka pick apart the crayfish is probably one of the most exciting part of owning one IME.. Especially as they become more strategic as they learn.

Please let us know how it turns out and you should probably join www.**************.com if you haven't already

Puffer forum is great, one of the most friendly, encouraging online fish keeping communities that I am a part of.

That being said...I should feed a 1" fahaka a live earthworm? I dont think that he will be able to eat it. He is very small.

You'd be surprised! Their teeth are for tearing.

Oh boy. Well...I might sneak in tomorrow morning. Supposed to show some people the lab anyways.

Eager to see if a 4" (at least) earthworm is going to be taken by my 1" puffer.

It will be amazing to see, but pufferpunk is the pro I guess you could say. :D
