New favorite food-Is raw beef liver safe?

My cats love raw liver, so I decided to see what my Aro thought, well he jumped up out of the water and snagged the liver and my thumb and forefinger to the first joints. Scraped all the way down, not gory enough to post apic, more startling than anything.

He dropped it and divebombed and gobbled it off of the bottom of the tank and begged all night for more. OOOHHH blood.

Do you think this is safe, since he likes it raw?

Well considering that it's beef and not chicken or any other animal you wouldnt eat raw ( Beef tartar)....I would think that it should be fine. Eww....who would eat beef shashimi anyhow?

Raw beef heart is fed to all kinds of fish, so I think liver would be fine as well.

liver is loved by fish, allthough liver , as well as all other mamal protein, like beef heart etc is only very seldom eaten by fish and their organism really is not equipped to deal with it..also, liver is one of the worst water polluters...

I don't feed it, nor heart..

Thanks for your input. I noticed it is messy, so If he misses a bite I snag it out immediately. I believe Mad Cow is from consuming brain, cooked or raw. Maybe my Aro has Mad Aro Disease! Just for kicks, he's quite fond of elk and venison, that's generally what meat is on hand. He prefers backstrap, but who doesn't want to eat grain fed Elk backstrap!

Mad Aro disease...I like it...Maybe that's his excuse!

It can occur in any cloven hooved animal I believe, the animal has to be handled correctly when cutting the meat.

The frenzy in the tank at one drop of blood is amazing, but I don't think I'll feed it because I am meticulous about my tank being clean. It's a good pre water change treat!

i would never feed Beef heart (or liver or whatever you have) after what i read in Practical Fishkeeping magazine. they had a big section on fish diet and it makes sense that when ya read it that beef heart and various other foods we take for granted are actually no good at all for fish to eat. it was in the dec or jan version of the Magazine. take a peek,

Wow, thank you for that. I don't subscribe to the mag, but I'll definately stop feeding it to him and research it more. Thanks for taking the time to make this post, my Aro seems a little unlike himself this am and the minute I woke up and looked at him, I went oh cr**, it must be the liver. So I really hope he is OK.

I do! Seriously, I eat raw steak and hamburger. Been doing it since I was a kid. Not every time, but almost. I'm way more apprehensive now with Mad Cow, Salmonella, E. Coli etc.
In fact, I can't eat the cooked stuff more than rare. Medium-rare and up aren't even edible in my book.

Best is when it's covered in Dave's Insanity Sauce!

Well, I like my steak med rare and a little rare sometimes.....hehe, I mean I dont like my steak to Moo when I poke it with a folk....nor do I wanna look my meat in it's eye's as I eat it. Dave's huh....hot stuff! Anyhow, not knockin ya....just not my flavor...But like BK, have it your way....always the best.....eat a Moo slab fer me buddy!
