just because people do it doesn't mean it's the best thing for the fish. that is a very nice looking fish but I agree that the tank size is not adequate for such a large fish. personally I hate hex and corner tanks becuase their odd shape takes away valuable swimming space. sure, 50ish gallons of water might be ok for that size fish, but a rectangular tank of the same gallonage would be much better because it would have more swimming room. just my 2 cents. :)

how do you figure a standard 55 gal provides more swimming space? because it's longer? The fish can swim all around without bumping glass with the width. This guy swims more up and down, digging in the gravel anyways. Sorry, I guess I'm just sick of everyone saying you need a 200 gallon tank to keep any sort of fish in.... but this is Monster fish keepers. Monster fish, monster tanks, right...

Nobody said anything about a 200 gallon tank, but a 75 gallon would do much better for your fish than either a standard 55 or the tank you have for him. The reason he swims more up and down is because there isn't enough footprint for him to swim around properly. Swimming up and down the majority of the time isn't really normal for any CA cichlid.

Anyway, this is just my opinion. I think your fish would be much better off in a tank that is long and wide instead of oddly shaped like a hex or corner tank. :)
