As we all know these rays **** a lot and I'm getting sick of washing and replacing 200 micron filter socks every 3 -4 days... currently my system is on 2 above ground sumps with a titanium controllable heater , a laguna max flo 2400 in each and a 7x16 inch 200 micron filter sock. The sumps are 100 gallon stock tanks. Not to mention an auto drip system thats doing roughly 150 gpd.

600 gallon 8x4x2.5

Stock

15 inch bd female
14 inch bd male
14 inch marble female
20 inch juruense
17 inch tigrinus
19-20 inch vatf

Any ideas?

Some of my systems I use baskets with batten polyfiber as the pre-filter. You can buy a roll at Wal-Mart for about $10. When its dirty just pull it out and toss it in the trash.

That's what I did before the filter socks that was just as bad lol

Are you open to getting an Ultima or similar closed loop system? Backwashing is a different ball game. I hate socks too

That's actually what i was looking to invest in.... I would rather backwash and clean the system then having to replace socks haha.

What kind of bio filter can you use in those things?

I dont mind paying the $$$ to invest in an Ultima but i have way too much matrix.....dont know if that would work?

What size Ultima would you suggest for this set up

My guess was a type of flowing bio media like k1... but wasn't sure if sinking bio like matrix could work

Have a number of Ultima's running and love them. I have a 600 running on two 2000 models. Slowly converting each tank away from socks for mech. There are a number of ways you can configure them. Using matrix in them would negate the backwash functionality. Ultima filters come pre loaded with a proprietary non-buoyant media (sinking K1 basically) so that it can tumble during backwash to remove trapped mechanical. Ceramic medias like matrix are static and would not tumble.

There are sand, bead type filters or DIY versions our there but none that would work well with ceramic media. IMO you could sell it and put it towards an Ultima or similar filter. I've posted numerous threads over in the setup and filtration section about them if you want to dig in a little.

Thanks ... I see that the media comes with the unit which is good.... I actually did dig a little through some old threads and answered most my questions but I still have a few more if you don't mind.

I've seen that a lot of members that use the ultima are still having mechanical filteration problems but bio has been on point...... Has it worked well for you with rays for mechanical?

How many gallons does the ultima 2000 model backwash at a time?

I was thinking maybe getting one 2000 model and using my laguna max flo 2400 pump for it and keeping one of the stock tank sumps with my other laguna max flow 2400......

Do you see any issues?

Thanks!

You bet. The Laguna 4280 is better for the 2000 model. I keep my 2000’s around 3-3.5k each but with pressure rates pumps like Reeflo. I’ve run a 1000 model with a Laguna 2400 and thought it was good. Just requires backwash more often due to the smaller size of the filter. If you do go Laguna use soft line to limit restriction

Most people who seem to have issues with mechanical are wildly overdoing the flow. A hammerhead on a 1000 is insane flow for something maxes out at 2,400 GPH. Set up correctly they are great for both mech and bio.

I do prefer to have K1 offset some bio. Mainly because I have tons around and it’s good insurance. I’ve ran Ultima only and been happy with both mech and bio.

I missed that question, sorry.

Yes I think they do great for mechanical with rays. These three EAT.. Pics below are the same tank, no socks. It takes 150-200 gallons to backwash properly. The longer you go between backwashes, the more water it takes to clean.
