As for me I think I'll order ultima media and see how that works out in the Hayward sand pool filter.
The Ultima chamber is made by Hayward except for the mulitiport valve.
If you want to make your own with a sand filter, you need to make sure the grids or slots on the multiport are small enough so the media doesn't escape during backwash. Also, the center pipe to the laterals has a check valve so when in backwash the water will go through jets to tumble the media.
