New filtration setup questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ammonia went down from about 6-10ppm to 2ppm as of this morning (That's a big improvement considering that it was uncycled a couple of days ago). My nitrites have gone up from 0.1 to about 0.25-0.5. The bottled bacteria has been working, and I ordered more since I ran out. I did ask my dad for about $10 more a month, but it's not happening, Although I did convince him to look into the 2262. If BigAl's gets them back in stock, I can use the coupon codes they gave me and get one for $334, which is a steal. I'll try to get him to buy one of those instead of making his own. He says that someone in Miami can make something equal to or better than the 2262, which I have trouble believing.

Maybe you guys can build a sump together, could be a cool experience to do with your dad. Can try and get all the parts (tank, filter, hob overflow) used off craigslist

Sounds like a good idea to me

There is a guy on craigslist selling a ProClear Aquatic Systems Pro 150 which comes with a protein skimmer and I believe a pump. If I can convince my dad to buy this I'll keep the skimmer if I ever get into saltwater. He is selling it for $135, with the average price being $300. It's supposed to be rated for 150 gallons, so I can run it with one 2215. Is ProClear a good brand?

That sump is a little too small for your tank. If you run it with both 2215's you should be alright with a moderate stock list. The 2260 and 2262 are the exact same size canister, but the 2262 has a much larger pump. The lesser flow rate on the 2260 is better for biological filtration, while the 2262 is better for mechanical (however the 2262 can still be a great bio filter).

I lost the sheet with the septobac dosages, what were they? I was going to get some, hopefully making my dad think I am spending another two hours a week maintaining the aquarium. He says once I take care of it more (I spend half of my free time on it), he'll look into buying a larger filter.
