Glad you got this fish Mike.

Here's a picture I posted when we first got him in at the store.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=311712

The kid that brought him in to me said he won him at an auction and the person he got him from claimed it was a newly described species of Amphilophus and called it a false Red Devil. Hopefully when he gets bigger we'll be able to tell.

I think whoever gave it to the kid may have been either full of it, or thought it wasn't discovered as of yet. I have to agree with some of Jimmy's on your previous thread on the canidits and his views.

Its impossible to tell from that picture, and also it can be hard to identify an Amphilophus at that size.
It could be any of the following:

A. Citrinellum 'barred'
A. Labiatus 'barred'
A. sp. ‘red Isletas’
A. Hoogaboomorum
A. sp. 'costarican redhead'
A. xiloaensis

Or a hybrid combination of any of the above.

Your best bet is to grow it on a bit then post pics from the tank.

Due to the mouth I would disqualify Labiatus and Zaliousus. Seriously doubt it is a "Costirican redhead" or a "Red Isletas". Best chaoices due to it's current build and colorations would say Citrinellum, Xiloanensis, or very doubtful Sagittae. I would bet money it is just a very nice specimen of Citrinellus.

+1 i think its a nice midas, either way its an adorable fish and should grow into a real brute, def keep us posted on his progress :)

Yeah I wasn't totally convinced by what the kid told me. Either way, this fish has definitely turned me on to Amphilophus.

I was also wondering at what point do these guys start to turn colors? That is, if they even are going to change. The fish pictured is a solid 6-7". Mike has had him in his tank for only a few days. Any ideas?

yeah i would think if its that big and hasn't peeled yet its most likely gonna keep his stripes

I agree it's probably either midas, xilo, or sagittae. Like I said before you will probably never know but you know you've got a monster on your hands. As long as you don't plan on breeding him you don't need to know the exact species anyways.

At that size I think it would have changed if it was going to. From the looks of it I would say it could only be either stright barred Midas or Chanco, possably (I really doubt it) Amarillo but that's it. I realize we'll never know for sure but for all practical purposes that's most likly what it is. We could debate this forever, but we can all agree whatever it is it's not a new find.

I will say again, it's a really good looking fish, I would not mind having at all. Anything Amphilophus is worth owning.;)

I was thinking the same thing, A. citrinellus. Hopefully he keeps the color, I'm not a huge fan of pink/orange or piebald. I guess time will tell. I'll get some more photos up here as soon as I take some, been busy working all day.
