NEW FISH COMING - I'M NERVOUS!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its cycled.. hes not fully reading your posts

hes something you would call a "slacker"

how can you cycle with prime? Prime is only a water conditioner, not live bacteria.

And MING - do you mean you dont add ANY chemicals? You don't dechlor your water?

Oh yes one more thing - sorry to derail - I've been checking out your photos recently etc, and was wondering what size your tank is and what filtration you have, it always looks nice and clean with crystal clear water.

mcmemily - just to let you know, adding tankwater does nothing to cycle a tank. There is no beneficial bacteria in the water, it's all in the filter media and substrate.

The best thing to do would be to add some live bacteria, add some platys, AND remove a portion of bio media from your old filter and ass it to the new one.

i agree with the last post leave everything the way it is and the fish will survive
if you take out the fiter pacs ul just decrease the bacteria it doesnt change how good it filters i have only changed my filter every other month and my parameters are great so just leave everything as is
the only thing ve ever added to my water is chlor out u dont really need anything else

I started with 50% new water and 50% water from my 75g. And yes, I added prime. I had the shrimp and I've hade plants and snails for over a month. Used wood from my other tank too. it's been running for almost 2 months now. You don't think it's cycled yet?
Wouldn't it most likely be cycled by this time with out the chemicals and shrimp?

So for almost 2 months, you've not done a single water change?

If you've removed the shrimp, I highly doubt your snails produce enough ammonia to sustain any significant amount of bacterial colony to support a group of fish.

I think the only reason your water testings are registering low nitrite and ammonia is because there aren't anything to produce them in the first place!

Dude, that's not how you properly cycle a tank.

I'm a little scared for you right now. Seriously.

You should've cycled the tank for at least a month with FISH. Those fish will produce ammonia, which triggers the cycle process.

Say you cycled with 4 fishes. Once cycle is done, your tank would be able to sustain 4 fishes. The more fish you add, the more bacteria is being produced as the result of additional ammonia.

Now, you cycled your tank for 2 weeks with shrimp, and the remaining 1 month and 2 weeks with just snails and plants?

That mean, however much ammonia is being produced by these snails and plants, that how much your tank can hold. Once you add these fishse you're receiving tomorrow, ammonia will definitly rise.

Do you understand this?

Let's say you're receiving 5 fishes tomorrow, you should've cycled with 5 fishes then remove them and introduce the new fish which you've ordered.

btw mc - MING is right that those shrimps and snails probably haven't produced enough, and regular enough amount of ammonia to cultivate enough bacteria to support a bunch of fish.

JUst add some more cycle regularly, if it works, and add salt too and keep feedings down for a few weeks.
