NEW FISH COMING - I'M NERVOUS!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So for almost 2 months, you've not done a single water change?

If you've removed the shrimp, I highly doubt your snails produce enough ammonia to sustain any significant amount of bacterial colony to support a group of fish.

I think the only reason your water testings are registering low nitrite and ammonia is because there aren't anything to produce them in the first place!

Dude, that's not how you properly cycle a tank.

I'm a little scared for you right now. Seriously.

You should've cycled the tank for at least a month with FISH. Those fish will produce ammonia, which triggers the cycle process.

Say you cycled with 4 fishes. Once cycle is done, your tank would be able to sustain 4 fishes. The more fish you add, the more bacteria is being produced as the result of additional ammonia.

Now, you cycled your tank for 2 weeks with shrimp, and the remaining 1 month and 2 weeks with just snails and plants?

That mean, however much ammonia is being produced by these snails and plants, that how much your tank can hold. Once you add these fishse you're receiving tomorrow, ammonia will definitly rise.

Do you understand this?

Let's say you're receiving 5 fishes tomorrow, you should've cycled with 5 fishes then remove them and introduce the new fish which you've ordered.

Okay! Okay! I'm listening! I got ya!
I had some gravel from my other tank in a net bag for awhile too. And I have done three water changes. I've watched my nitrates, nitrites and ammonia raise and lower. There are plenty of people who cycle tanks without fish aren't there? I've never had a problem before, but I'm just a bit more worried this time b/c of the # of fish going in at once. What if I put in some feeders for my other tank into this one? I'm just worried about disease. Otherwise I don't know what I'll do with the other fish.

Well..
Now it seems I'll have plenty of time anyway b/c it looks like I'm not gettng my friggin fish b/c the f**cking airline tried to triple the shipping and they never got sent. :swear:

well, I think the airline just saved you a bunch of headaches later on.

seriously.

people do cycle tanks without fish, and there are several different methods in doing so, but you still need to add (in one form or another) ammonia in the tank!

the initial spike that you've witnessed is normal. newly setup tanks even without fish will have a spike due to the nutrient in the water that is naturally there.

when you do "fishless cycling", you add pure ammonia in your tank OR you add a piece of cut fish or anything that will rott in the tank, which produces the ammonia (just for kicks, you can even urinate in your tank too), but that has to be continuous for a month or so.

again, the easiest way is just buy some big feeder goldfish and cycle the tank with those.

;)

Right on.
I'm still bummed. Looks like I'll be getting some feeders on the way home from work.
:(

MING - yep I know water purifier things for drinkign purposes, but they are usually in a jug type thing.

How does yours work straight out of the tap? Sounds good.

well, basically I press a button and the water will pass through this purifier and I can position it ontop of my tank so the filtered water goes stright into the tank.

btw, my tank is right next to my sink!

Stress zyme has worked ok for me, but apparently cycle is crap. People say bio-spira is good, never tried it, can't get it in Europe.

Whats bio spira?
Also, how many feeders do you think? Should I get goldfish or guppies?
How long do they need to be in there?

Get 4 good sized goldfish.

Keep them in there for at least 2 more weeks.

Bio-spira is a pouch of liquid bacteria that is kept refrigerated.

Worked well for me when I worked in a pet store. We use them to cycle all our new tanks.
