those two things dont ussually go together.....warm water (by the laws of physics) naturally has far less saturated oxygen than colder water. but yes, both the armatus and the sturgeon (paddlefish too) want highly oxygenated water (which i am providing via 2 hob filters allowied to crash onto the surface). the temperature is a happy medium (this is my first armatus, tho i have kept every other payara save wallaci in the past) between the sturgeons temperature range and the armatus. i belive this has potentail to work long term....

thats why you find armatus in rapids.
high oxygenated water even though its warm.

Very cool man. I don't think I ever saw anyone housing a paddlefish in their home aquarium!!!! True exotic to me. Are you sure the Armatus will be ok? They are prone at young ages for disease and I am sure cooler water isn't going to help. I am sure you know all of that and probably have a good backup plan. I was just curious.

thanks :)
and yea, very much aware :) i have the saline treatment for ich already present in the water (2tsp per gallon) and its not really "cold" water, its 79 degrees, which is where i tend to keep the temp with my tropical tanks anyways.

yes, true. that is why i have the HOB filters on there. they roll over the surface making two streams of bubbles :)

How much did you win at poker today?

just a few bucks. haha. doubled my buy in tho :)

Haha nice nice. The indo at Tong's is split bar both sides. I woud rather get it shipped in from hawaii, it would still be cheaper plus on pellets and shrimp too compared to probably only feeders that Tongs feed their stuff :grinno:

Awesomeness!! Went to a Bass Pro around here and they had a shovelnose sturgeon in a HUGE tank (several thousand). I guess they only grow to 4' or so. Gorgeous fish for sure! Made me crave some! :D

Btw....hows that paddlefish doing? I would LOVE to get some of those, just not sure on how to keep them, feeding, and all that other jank. I suppose I could just catch some around here, not sure how to go about doing that either. LoL

yea, shovelnose are my favorite sturgeons. very very hard to find in the trade tho. mine is a white...or at least thats the best i cud do as far as an id.

the paddlefish is doing marvelously, better than i had expected. they are built up to be obligate filter feeders but mine takes silverside chunks off of a skewer. as far as water conditions well oxygenated room temp water would be fine. biggest issue aside from feeding is their clumsyness. they are horrible swimmers and need a rounded (or padded) tank with lots of open area near the top (thats where mine tends to swim).

if ouve ever kept any pelagic marine fish they are the same way. paddlefish litterally never stop moving. i dont even think they can stop.....

Huh. Thats most interesting. Active AND cool looking.

So if they are 'obligate' filter feeders, how large of items are we talkin? Like FINELY diced market and such shrimp, or puree foods? Gotta be prepared just in case I decide to get some and they refuse to take larger food stuffs like yours.

Where did you get it anyway? Rich? I know I saw them for sale a while back, but haven't seen them since. Or perhaps I just missed it.

id say anything diced into little chunks (like smaller than a centimeter but not mush?) would work. i tried silversides, mysis shrimp and market shrimp before the skewer worked.

i got mine from a LFS in my area. all happy has them for $60, as does TFD (tfd might be sold out) for $35. a member on here, boxlotfish that is located in florida i belive has them as well. for the same price as tfd and is willing to ship.

they really are unique fish and there is litterally nothing else like them. ive wanted to try keeping one for a long long while.
