Pretty simple - Rare = something that is hard to get. A lot of Charries have common species and rare species in the same family - Hydrocynus, Hydrolycus, and Hoplias are all perfect examples.

The problem lies in proper identification.... You have fish peddlers out there that want to sell you fish and have no problem stretching the truth to make a sale. The other problem lies in a hobbyist wanting a fish to be something that it isn't so desperately that they not only believe themselves but others jump on board in hopes of a happy ending to the diamond in the rough fairy tale of finding something "rare" mixed in with common stuff, and to sweeten the deal obtain it for the common price.

End of the day - don't loose focus on the main objective - obtaining a fish you want regardless of what it ends up being..... IF you're happy with it don't let anyone screw that up. Its not their fish it's yours and your happiness is the ONLY thing that matters. Haterade is a common drink in the fish world - don't let jelly haters make you bitter about your fish......

Unfortunately you are dealing with one of if not THE worst species of Characin to be able to ID cause even science seems clueless to species and variants of this family.
