sucks dude i have alot of plants in my tank and still have readings of nitrates
As you should, not healthy for the plants to lack the nitrate all together, but I have had that problem before.

I do this or the drip method with all my fish and they all are fine, This is the first fish i've had die of an unknown cause before.

well, if i spend 150 $ than i can get a ngt and another irwini :(!!!!1

the nitrates were probably low do the the w/c? but im not sure. the java fern actully is more like java ferns i had one andnow i have little ones growing every where.

If the jur dies to, i'm takeing a brake from fish keeping for awhile....

My fish that are slow aclimated are only slowly aclimated using drip. I temp the water for others, but they just get dropped in.

Im really annoyed at myself, I cant stand when fish die not because the money was waisted but because they fish had to die. If this jur or any other fish dies Im takeing a brake untill x-mas when i have more money and my tank outside is finished and has fish in it.

I'm moving all my fish tanks ( exsept the 75 and 450 ) into my room or house, will build them all a stand, and w/d. And do w/c on my tanks every day. I will not have another fish die....

get a new test kit.

I seriously doubt that you had 0 nitrates. If your numbers are right you havent even started your cycle. It would take a lot of java fern to get the nitrates to 0.

The kit is brand new, I shoulk it up and everything it was either between 0-5 i couldent tell so i went with 0

So you're taking like a two week break? Seriously though don't get discouraged.

I cant help it, I dont know why but For some reason i was attached to these 2 guys and now 1 died and i feel like all my fish are just gona die on me  ... I know i'm 15 almost 16 and am gona have plenty of fish die and what not but it sucks....

When you can't discern the color, always assume the higher number, never the lower. Rough estimate on the java fern needed for a 55 to have 0 ppm nitrate would be approximately 12 plants that are 10-12" in diameter. I'd recommend getting the Seachem Nitrite/nitrate test. They are very easy to use, you can test both nitrite and nitrate with the same sample of water. The testing vessel is white, to make color discerning much easier. They are also more accurate I have found then the API test. I have 4 API master test kits, and used all four on nitrite and nitrate, plus the Seachem on all at the sametime. The API ranged on Nitrite 0-.5ppm, and on Nitrate it ranged from 5-25ppm nitrate. With the Seachem Nitrite was a definite 0 ppm, and the nitrate was ~8-9 ppm nitrate. All of the API tests are still valid according to their production date, and all were properly shaken.

Its a master test kit its probably bs.. I'm going to petsmart tomorrow i will pick up Black worms ( if the jur is still alive ) and a nitrite/nitrate test kit...

Wish me good luck guys im going to take a shower and moap around cuz my baby catfish is no longer with me!!!!!!!!
