WTF? Who is buying all these gator gars here? Are you shipping them across Canada to other people? If one ever ends up for sale I'd like to buy it, since these a tank raised and not wild they won't get as big.

The question gar is wild caught and I didn't bought from Fantasy aquatics. Only the gator gar is captive breed.

Ok we got mix answers here. What makes you guys think it's a cuban or a trop.
haha i guess i'm the only who thought it's a tropical...

from the shape/width/proportion/etc of the head/eye/snout, i narrow it down to tropical or cuban. The first pic is kinda a toss-up for me, since i haven't kept a cuban, so to me it looks like it could be either. But the 2nd pic showing the side view of the head really reminded me of a tropical, hence my answer.

I know you said it's dark because it's stressed, but regardless, i was expecting a bit more brownish tone for a cuban, like a really dark brown, and a dark gray like this for a tropical.

Xander did have a dark cuban gar when he took it out if the bag.
yeah i know. anyway i wasn't saying it's dark, so it's not a cuban. What i meant was i was expecting a very dark brown for a dark cuban, and a dark gray (like in the pic) for a dark tropical, regardless of why it got dark. Anyway i'm not saying that's a fact, just my own thoughts, which could be wrong LOL As i said, my answer was based on the 2nd pic...the color was just something extra and not the basis for my guess.

Good thing on not basing color for any reason to ID this fish and using it secondary only. However that first pic really nails it.. It is a Tristo. Cubans have a pretty distinctive snout profile. If your not used to it though it can easily be a passed over trait and Tropicus could easily be gleaned out of it.

I think Ricky your guess here has the best reasons to look again and offers the best analysis right or wrong. Good to see once and awhile as I even backed up and re-checked long before posting this on your thoughts. Had to take a double take at anomaly Bonsai Trop down in the basement just to compare. Still though that top snout profile kills it.

ah so the top snout profile is the telltale sign. yeah i'm sure i passed over the trait since i'm not used to seeing it.

btw, i know most(?) young tropicus have the trident pattern on the head which gets less and less pronounced as they age. i was expecting a tropicus to still show it at 11" if it had it, and i noticed the fish in the pic doesn't. But i know it's not a definitive trait, so i didn't give it too much thought. In hindsight, is that something secondary that can be used?

ps. i've seen solomon's shortbody spotted. is your bonsai trop like that or is it still proportionally normal but just staying small?

Here is the comparison pics of cuban and tropical gar's head upper view. (Pics are not mine)
