New gar!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nice-looking gars, congrats. there is no way the owner would know if they were male or female unless they spawned for him/her, and that is extremely unlikely. just make sure this shop owner isn't charging you extra because they are calling them "a pair"...this is extremely unlikely.

the fish are indeed Florida gars, not spotted gars. nice fish either way, and good that they are already off live, which will make things a lot easier in terms of feeding/maintenance.--

Hmm that is wierd that you say they are forsure Florida gars. I looked at the different ID links posted and it looks like Floridas have more dark lines going horizontally, you know? Thanks guys for the compliments!

Florida patterns are quite variable, but this fits within that variation. if you look at the pics of the spotted gars you'll see that they look different from the fish you have pictured...particularly slimmer profile and longer snout--

Nice looking gars, some day I would like to get some myself. Are you keeping them with your silver aros?

Yep I am keeping them with two 14" silver arowanas. I have seen in other posts people say "no way can they live together blah blah blah" but I have seen it done and they haven't done anything except look at eachother. They are getting along great in my opinion.

That advice is what is keeping me from housing gar, seems to be the opinion of the more experienced gar keepers. Also have seen posts of gars breaking backs or being killed when silver aros freak out.

Yeah I mean I could totally understand that happening. But I also know that our aros don't freak out and the gar isn't skittish at all. I would definitely not keep a juvi gar with aros because they seem to be very skittish. Take a look at keepinfish's tank (my new favorite tank/stock...so envious) He has aros, gars, rays, a massive fire eel, some catfish, and I know I am forgetting some and all of his fish are beautiful and healthy! That tank of his is pretty much my motivation right now for keeping an abnormal but freakin awesome stok list!

u r keeping ur gar(which u claim cost u 400 bucks) with silver aro? wow..... where is that pic....
