carbon black filters are cheap... you asked how to avoid the problem thats how... just flow your water through a carbon block and your problem is solved....

I have been keeping fish for years and the water has always came out of copper pipes and have never had a single problem with the water quality.
to the OP smile man and thank god you don't have galvanized plumbing (Not that its toxic but its not nearly as good as copper) . Your fish will be fine I will put my reputation on it 
Thanks guys, I guess I was just being paranoid as I know someone who moved house and lost a lot of Tropheus because of copper in the water.
old copper is a little different than new.... oddball put up a thread on it before.... or a post...
Flush the lines for a couple of minutes. I have had problems from copper pipes, but flushing the pipes for a couple of minutes seems to do the trick. Get a copper test if you're really worried, they're available. Or at least they were, I haven't tested for copper for a few years.
