New goonch!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Quick update: still hasn't eaten yet, but it's more active now, at least when the lights are out, but I noticed that it enjoys the high flow but it looks like its too much. Is there such thing as too much flow for a goonch? It tried to park itself in front of the small powerhead at the bottom and it kept getting blown backwards so it swam away. Should I throw something in front of the powerhead so that it could grip on or a hiding spot in front of it or will that not matter?

Goonch are found in very fast flowing water so he probably likes it, maybe try outing some more driftwood or rocks in the tank and see what happens, also try to gut-load the feeder fish so there can be more nutrition when the goonch starts to eat, and then u can try to train him with pellets by stuffing some in some market fish or shrimp :) hope this helps

Haha I know they love high flow, but just wasn't sure about the babies since babies of a lot of species tend to hide in shallow areas with lots of hiding spots and low flow. I'm trying not to feed it feeders. The store only fed it live blackworms

Nice pick up. Is that a saltwater live rock you have in the tank? Goonch likes flow/current. Keeping your water on the cool side like 70F will help. I didn't have hard time with those 6" I bought a couple of years ago eat smelts that was cut in pieces, or those that i just got recently to eat mackerel that was cut in pieces. The ones I currently keep could eat daily if I feed them and they hover around the tank like vaccuum cleaners when I put food in the tank. They even go up to the surface to eat float Hikari pellets just like my P. granulosus or silver arowana

What's your secret man? I've been trying to feed it tilapia and massivore but so far nothing. I'll even rub them in its face but it just doesn't care and no, it's a lava rock I believe that I bought years ago from the lfs when I was like 8.

Ah! Faded lava rock. I have no secret. May be just poor luck. The ones I got recently has been captive raised the past two years from 6" to 20"-24" specimen so they are well trained. Don't stress yours. Just put food in the tank, and turn off the light. Try smelts cut in pieces or anchovies. Just one or two pieces, once a day for about a week, and then you can sit there and feed it until you drop when it gets used to the taste of them.

I'll give him a week before I start to worry. The store was only feeding it live blackworms and it loved them. Hopefully he starts eating soon though, I doubt those worms were very filling for it.

Actually live black worm is good for young fish, but it's inconvenience for us to house them. In case your goonch getting stubborn, you can just give it live black worm so it can put on some weight before switching it to smelts or anchovies. You don't want to keep your little guy off food for more than 3-4 days. He may not survive

Oh ya. I wasn't doubting the nutritional value of them. I just meant that since these guys are complete gluttons, it would take a lot of worms to get them full.

So I think, I THINK, my goonch actually ate last night. I'm not quite sure. There was one goldfish in there last night. It was extremely big so if any of the payara's ate it, they would've had a huge bump in their stomachs but they don't. The aba ate a ton of tilapia so I'm pretty sure it'd be too full to go after the goldfish so the only one left is the goonch. I'm hoping it was him that ate it and not the aba but I couldn't see a bump in the goonches stomach :/ anyways, the goonches skin is sloughing off. I haven't read anything about this but I'm assuming its normal since a lot if catfish do.
