Looks like I'll be ordering another one, left it in the care of my mother for the weekend, and came back to a dead pikerel... *sigh* so much for my excitement...

sorry to hear that as have been reading your posts. I have also ordered from Paul but nothing big like your pikerel though do like them.

I did want to ask you . Arent they incredibly delicate as young ?

ive got three of them i got from brian zimmerman on nanfa.org, i had four of them and my 7" grass pickerel jumped out at night and i found him the next morning.

i still havent covered the tank but i need to very badly, i was feeding them one day and a feeder was at the top of the water and the pickerel got hte feeder and jumped all the way out of the tank, luckily i was there and put it back into the tank, but i definatly need to build a hood.

they like TONS of plants and hiding spots too.

ive found that sunfish make great tankmates for them, the sunfish are not nearly as aggressive though when it comes to feeding, luckily my sunfish are happy with pellots.

i tried a small mouth bass with them, the bass would eat 6-7 feeder goldfish and leave NONE for the pickerel, so i had to get rid of the bass, he was only 5-6" long at the time

good luck with them, I hope to get some redfin pickerel from the waccamaw river next time im at my grandpa's house in north carolina, redfin's are the same as grass, but with red fins :)

I wish I knew what happened to the lil guy, but not being home, I have no idea.
I'm thinking of ordering a redfin this time... I'm not leaving town this time, so hopefully it would be safe.

I just brought my 75g home, so I'm thinking of switching my natives from their 45 to the 75 and put a divider in for the pikerel with a really planted side. I'm waiting for Paul to get back to me with what he has at the moment.

Louie,
What did you order from Paul? I've been looking at those blue spot sunfish trying to decide how bad I want one :D

I ordered only plants and inverts since moving to S.Florida bit over year ago.

When I lived in NY ordered darters from him .
I Had them for yrs and would order cultures from him here and there . My first order from him was money order and I was 18 . I like the guy but putting that aside like his stock.

I have seen his blue spotteds as fish club I belonged to in NY guy there was into natives thats guy who told me tiny small pikerels are very delicate.
I found the blue spotteds real nice ESP the male , the F was so so but thats the case with sunfish and darters any way.
His spawned the spring/summer he had them by themselves in yard planted kiddie pool but dont know outcome of it.

My area is way to hot/warm its cichlid temps thus never got any fish for backyard ponds only plants and inverts .

Why not stop by home depot, etc pick up plastic sheet of "egg crate " and put that on till you make hood. Even plastic floating plants go a long way .
