As of today the new growout tank has been stocked.

Been up and going for over a week with 5 Armatus, 1 Silver Aro, and 4 Odoe. The 2 smallest Odoe had to be moved (from the shoal of 6) weeks back as the Armatus began chasing them.

The tank is 3 by 4 by 1.5' with a Dart driven W/D, Powerhead driven sponge, and a Fluval 405.

The Armatus have continued harassing the Odoe but never even acknowledge the Aro's presence.

My 7 piece Dorado shoal exploded. The largest Dorado killed the smallest. My largest seems to not really like the company of the other Dorado, as it apparently is responsible for the deaths of 2 other Dorado prior to arrival at my place. The shoal of 6 was fine for a month. Added the largest and was fine for a week or 2. Then I find the smallest one shredded a few days ago. May be aggression issues, may be a lack of frequent feedings.

So...... I'm wondering if maybe 2 wrongs can make a right.?!

I added the 3 smallest Dorado to the growout hoping they act as dithers and get the Armatus's attention and maybe the Armatus will focus on the Dorado rather then the Odoe. If it works, I'll add the 2 larger Dorado.

Sizes-
(1) Aro - 9 inches

(5) Armatus - 5-7 inches

(4) Odoe - 4-5 inches

(3) Dorado 4-5 inches

Observations so far.......

Odoes hate current. IF this tank works out and the Odoes don't end up in a 75 with the other 2 runt Odoes, I'll have to try to cut current by using spraybars instead of jets.

Right now the Odoes seeem to enjoy the company of the Dorado. They are still attempting to shoal with them. In my prior Odoe tanks I found they enjoy the company of others, maybe since the Armatus are picking on them they are just happy to have any other fish in the tank with them.

The Armatus have allready began charging the Dorado. The trio has yet to even acknowledge thier presence. The Dorado don't even change path or speed when being charged. The Armatus are being completely ignored.

As much as the Odoe want to shoal with the Dorado it seems frivelous. The Dorado are simply too fast and weave too much.

Aro's behavior is unchanged. I believe it knows it is still the biggest fish in the tank.

Knock on wood but the first few hours are going according to plan.

I'll try to keep this updated every few days, IF I get my camera fixed I'll add pics, but as of right now the camera is inop. I should be able to find some recent pics though prior to the Dorado additions.

Will it work? Probobly not..... Will we ever know without trying? NOPE. I've been wanting to try this for a while but was not confident enough to trust them all while at work. Beings that I lost my job and am at home most of the day on weekdays what better time to give it a go? First time there is a sign of danger the "experiment" will be over and I'll begin moving stuff around again till a solution can be reached. All in all just sick of wondering.... "Could it work?"

:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

So what do you guys think?

An hour? A Day? A week? A month? Stupid for trying?

At least you are trying! Best of luck on your setup. We need pics....

Yeah lets see this set up.

I would love to see it too!! I dunno what to tell ya at this point accept give it a shot. I don't think your Armatus will mess with the Aro. He has a decent amount of size on them. GL, and let us know what your up too!!!!

good luck bro.would love to see pics.im trying somethin kindof similar,2 armatus,2 orinos, and an african aro.so far so good.keep us posted.

Update...

The tank doesn't appear tall enough. If the Dorado stay up high enough in the tank everything's fine, they come down and the Armatus quickly respond. The speed they are capable of is amazing.

The Dorado are coming back out. One`s got an eye injury.

I think it could work with a few adjustments. Definetly need a larger tank.

Maybe I'll try it again when the entire group of Armatus are off live and they are big enough to mix with the rays in their growout. Maybe 300 will be big/ tall enough?

Ill try to get some pics up in the AM.

Nice looking fish man!!!!! Beautiful Aro!

love the Army pack you got there. I tried to mix an 8" armatus with a new 4" armatus. the bigger one wasn't having it, had to move the smaller one. nice to see your lil shoal doing so well.

Lil update....

The Dorado with the wounded eye seems to be healing thus far.

Not sure how much longer I'm going to leave the Odoe in there. I have 1 (way bigger obviously dominant) that is completely reliant on dead food but the other 3 aren't taking. This tank has far too much current to try any floating food, which doesn't help the situation. More then that though I believe they are pretty stressed from the Armatus's charging. They don't charge the large one, but the 3 smaller get it regularly. They seem very unhappy huddled in the corner underneath the return jets. I believe I'll seperate them and put them with the other pair in a 75 where I can continue thier diet of feeeders then transition them once they are in a little more appropriate conditions. The Odoes really seem to hate current.

2 Armatus are eating cut smelt regularly, everytime it's offered, no strings attatched, and even beginning to rush the surface for it. They recognize that me standing in front of the tank and a little noise from the cover being moved = feeding time. 1 just took it's first piece yesterday, had to use the bent staple tied to fishing string rig I used in breaking the first 2 (only real option due to the current). Another eats every few days via the string, and the last one is still being stubborn. Beings that 4/5 are eating smelt I believe I am done with feeders in this tank.

There is a lot of "tag" being played amongst the Armatus, charging across the tank but no injuries. The 2 that are taking smelt regularly are clearly the dominant ones. Have been the whole time I've had this group. Watching them grow up it's always been one loaner and one that enjoyed the corner and would chase any that came into it, but accepted the other 3 hanging real close by. The 2 dominant ones growth seems to be slipping away from the other 3, as they are now probobly at least an inch bigger.

Once they are all completely broke I'll let them get another couple inches put on and I think they will be ready for the 300. Just want to make sure they are larger then the rays and roughly the same size as the Cynopotomus. May try reintroducing Dorado, or Odoe at that time.
