New Guy Here, Northern Pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, they are cool fish. It was only a minor mistake, just thought I would clear things up a bit.

Northern Pike are sweet fish to have in tanks. I had 7 northerns in my tanks about 4.5 years ago. They were about 13 - 14" when I got my hands on them. I grew them up to about 18 - 19" before releasing them. They would eat minnows out of my hand. I wish I had some larger tanks. I would of kept a few of them.

This became 3 pages before I jumped in....

Northern are for people who like to watch their fish prey on minnows or feeders. They are not as entertaining as a Bass but the hunt is a lot better. Bass and others will just gobble gobble but the Pike Family sneaks up on it's prey and then strikes.

In the spring I'm going to catch myself couple baby northerns and keep them until they get big. I hope to be upgrading tanks but they will still outgrow it. When they do then I'll find a place for them, maybe somebody's stomach but not mine.

I've kept Northerns, LMB, Crappies, bullheads, walleyes, and sunfish when I was a kid and to me the best is the northern Pike. I guess it's the way they hunt that intrigues me. Bass are overall the best since they are entertaining, espcecially for guess who wants to see them load up on feeders.

If you want to keep a pike for a long time then get the redfin pickerel, they only grow up to 1 foot or maybe even less in an aquarium. This place sells them.................http://www.aquaculturestore.com/fwverts.html

I have kept a few of the essox group in tanks now. The biggest thing with keeping them is food. They eat untill there belly bulges out and the next morning, Its flat again. Super expensive to feed.

I found out that going to the local bait shop is a lot cheaper than going to petsmart for some rosy reds. Plus the bait shop minnows are bigger and when you ask for a dozen or so they give you a lot more.

Yeah they eat a lot but that's the main reason I keep them. :headbang2

im from michigan and i have a friend who was bit in the foot by a pike when we were swimming. his foot was bleedin like crazy. it looked like it hurt. as far as the redfin pikeral... do they really look and act like pike? that would be sweet. my dad has always fished. his favorite fish is the pike. having a fish like that would be kinda nustalgic(spelling?). hey penut, could i put a couple with pike cichlids or would that be a no no?

I have tried Redfins with Chrenicichla sp. "xingu I" and had nothing but failure. The Redfins got wacked everytime. They are mean feeders but not as teritorial as the crenicichla. I believe Northerns are more territorial. From what i have heard, the Musky holds the largest territory of them all. Redfins do better with a little less aggressive cichlids like Oscars. Norhterns also do not like warm water.
