New holy grail since beani?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, Woody took that vidio on our 2006 trip at the base of Tamasopo falls, The reason they re so rare is they are the biggest fish in the system and most have been eaten by the locals, There is a park at Tamasopo and no fishing and that is the only reason they are there. Ken

Thanks Ken. How big do they get?

I recon that the next one in Australia will either be Argentea or Grammodes, or other basket mouth species.

I remember contacting you regarding these and none were available.
I really like the shape on these. very interesting.

I imported a fair number of captive bred ramsdeni several years ago from Europe.
They bred repeatedly, but none of the eggs were ever fertilized.
European hobbyists who kept progeny from the same spawn of ramsdeni as I experienced the same results.

Here are a few pics of them just for reference.

They may not have any bright primary colors to enjoy, but they were interesting to keep. The nuchal hump grows to resemble an ice cream cone that someone tipped upside down on top of the fishes' head!

Herichthys steindachneri was available in the hobby in the past. I have a friend that used to spawn them years ago, but couldn't even give the fry away.
There really is just a small circle of people that are interested in these rare and often drab colored cichlids. Once the guys that want them receive them, there is no market for them. Reminds me of H pantostictus. I bred them a few years ago when they were completely unavailable in the hobby. I thought people would jump at the chance to work with this species. I ended up selling about 12 to hobbyists. The rest I sent over to Jeff and even he had a tough time selling them. If the small group of hobbyists that are interested in these sort of species quite working with them because they can't get rid of the fry, they just fade out of the hobby.

It's funny to regard the 'what's hot and what's not' species of the past several years. Do some of you recall these fish? Some are still en vogue, some not so much.

I believe these are examples of C. orinocensis nowadays. However, 7-8 years ago, they were unfamiliar to the cichlid world.
