Most tanks these days have the top and bottom frame made of plastic. The glass from my 100g will hold my weight. The plastic frame will not.

Point being, the glass is very strong stuff and carries the weight/strength of the tank. The frame is there for looks mostly (it is also used to prevent point loading in most designs.)
 
its on the back right, so you could sand the surface of the glass and the repair you did, lay the tank on its side, mix up a gallon of "bondo" and put a quarter inch insurance policy over the entire back, would be strong as steel and uglier than a bald cat. you would have to do a styrofoam back or some type of in tank background.
